Most wind chimes are a public nuisance and should be musically certified before sale

r/

I hate 90% of wind chimes. I’m musically inclined, and the randomness of the notes makes me feel like I’m being slowly tortured. They’re usually high-pitched, tonally dissonant, and repetitive. It’s not peaceful. It’s noise pollution dressed up as something calming.

Every now and then, I hear a set that actually sounds intentional. Good pitch, decent intervals, something resembling harmony. But those are rare. Most are just cheap metal tubes clanging together like a toddler throwing silverware into a fan.

If you’re going to hang a noisemaker outside your house where everyone can hear it, it should at least pass some kind of basic tonal quality check. Just because something makes sound doesn’t mean it’s musical.

Whenever I hear wind chimes I feel something eerie is happening or about to happen

I generally agree, but I think the bigger ones with a deeper pitch can sound okay. The lower pitches are more forgiving for tuning than higher pitches, and it takes more wind to flap them around, so you are hearing only 2 or 3 notes ringing at a time rather than hearing all 8 notes all at once.

It’s supposed to emphasize the beauty of randomness and give form to the movements of the wind. Don’t try to organize it into a song by human standards.

They make windchimes in musical scales so that the chime tone isn’t just chromatic

Wind chimes are not meant to be musical.. They are MEANT to be discordant because nature is discordant.

I worked at a garden center we had this huge set of windchimes. Like 5 feet long and $120.

The store stopped carrying them and they got marked down to like $40, so I bought them for my grandmother and hung them on her porch at her retirement community.

For weeks afterwards she would hide a little smile when other old people would mention how they glad they were that the chapel had gotten a new carillion. Those things were so deep and in tune that her neighbors thought they were church bells.

Unfortunately, after she passed my aunt took them. She had been eying them since the day I hung them up.

Thats all well and good until they decide to buy a few different wind chimes over time that are out of key with each other

I’m also “musically inclined”, but i like the unmusical sound of wind chimes.

My wife has some tuned to the Fmaj scale IIRC. Either way, even that still gets annoying imo. Wind chimes are just lame.
