Why do people assume a lot of stuff about fictional characters?

r/

So let’s say there’s a book, game, a movie, whatever about a fictional world with many more or less interesting characters.

Why is it so common that people assume their genders, sexualities and why is it the first thing their minds stray to?

Why do people ship characters, especially those that would never even see each other in such light?

Does it all come down to people just trying to pour themselves into these characters, project their own feelings, ideas via these characters despite dabbling in fantasies that are lies and simply not true?

I always wonder why people stray so far from the truth despite the fiction describing everything in a perfectly clear manner.

It’s also because you have to create the character in your head from the information given. This leaves things open to interpretation especially in reading.

One phrase could be read flirty, angrily, sarcastic etc which can then inform that relationship between two characters. If you always read it as flirty you will create their relationship in a more romantic or friendly way than if you perceive it to be angry.

Is this common? How often are characters introduced with zero refernce to their gender?

Some fans enjoy fan fiction. Those that enjoy “shipping” tend to find eachother online. This can lead to a false perception that there are large amounts of fans that indulge in this sort of thing. The overwhelming majority of fans of the show Sherlock have absolutely zero interest in some weirdo’s collection of Cumberbatch/Freeman furry rimming sketches.
