What do men in the military think of women in the military?

r/

I just saw a video saying that women in the military never actually see active combat. Is that true?
Also, in the comments, men were talking about how useless women were in the military. I’m not super feminist so I’m not up in arms about this but it did make me really curious.

I don’t really care to be honest. You are free to do as you choose. Until she starts yelling at me and giving me orders. Then I find it laughable. Like am I supposed to be intimidated?

Hold on. Let me ask every single man in the military and get back to you on this.

Spoiler alert: it’s going to take a lot of time

I honestly don’t give a fuck as long as they meet the standard, there are equally shitty male soldiers and equally shitty female soldiers.

It is what it is, I think the main issue is that we’re highlighting and focusing on gender and race versus the actual person and what actually defines them. I could give a fuck if a dolphin somehow got a waiver to serve, as long as it’s competent and can meet the standard then go ahead.

Stop focusing on gender and race as it adds to the problem, the enemy doesn’t give a crap if you’re male or female. They just see an American enemy.

I’ll weigh in. Nearing retirement in the Air Force, and have had a lot of experience working with each of the other branches, other government agencies, and other countries’ militaries.

Women do see active combat. Ashton Goodman comes to mind for me, but that’s just because I knew of her. Many, many other women have seen combat and performed every bit as well as men.

They’re not useless, or even less useful. Anyone who’s been shot at will tell you that all the muscle and rah rah bullshit counts for nothing. What matters is your mind and your ability to react under the most incredible stress and high you can imagine.

The guys you’re referencing belong to a group that has a hard time reconciling themselves with the fact that the most important six inches on a battlefield is between your ears (compliments of Gen. Jim Mattis).

I’ve seen several people utterly freeze when they hear the whistle of an incoming mortar. I’ve also seen people lose all military bearing. I’ve seen more who react appropriately. I’ve not seen any difference between males and females when that times comes.

They are useless in combat. They push the injury rates up and performance down even in peace time. The Marines did a big study before forced integration showing how bad they were for the infantry and the politicians forced in anyway. That’s this whole fucking era. Make everything worse for misplaced empathy. I guess getting a bunch of women killed and more of the men is ok if there is more fucking feminism.

Bring back Women’s Auxillaries and free a man to fight.

I have zero qualms with women in the military. A lot of service members don’t see combat. There’s more to war than infantry so there’s plenty of room for people with different skill sets.

I dealt with plenty of shitbags while I was in, that includes both men and women.

Bro 90% of the military themselves never see combat. What makes you think women do?

  9. TheBooneyBunes Avatar

Depends on which military you’re talking about, but women in militaries like USA Ukraine and Israel (ie, militaries that A allow women and B actually have seen significant combat recently) do see combat if they’re in combat roles.

In terms of women being ‘useless’, that’s not true at all bodies in uniform are useful somewhere but as the USMC proved they’re less useful, which shouldn’t be surprising given biology and the logistics trail.

Me personally I hold the view that if you have a choice you shouldn’t have women in the military at all. A. They’re less effective than men in combat conditions and yes they’ll be there eventually because B. When combat arms take casualties or are given extraneous tasks they pull behind the line men to the front, so those behind the line women will still see combat in high attrition warfare and C…just look at what the Russians and Islamist militias do to prisoners they capture…you want a woman to be subject to their ‘hospitality’ (although Hamas/PIJ did capture some women and well…my point)

It’s not that they didn’t find themselves in harm’s way from time to time. They did and still do. But up until they allowed them into combat arms, those scenarios were convoys, indirect fire, or the few odd instances/circumstances they happened to find themselves in. There is a big difference between going on a patrol versus riding in a gun truck on a convoy or taking a random rocket or mortar round. The few women that have actively seen combat are an exception to the rule.

As much as women deal with bullshit in the military, they still receive preferential treatment. I’ve served in instances where it was all male as well as in instances where it was co-ed. I’ve served with great people and straight up shit bags of both genders. I didn’t personally have a problem with them so long as they tried and put in effort while doing their job.

Women generally struggle to fit in socially speaking because they truly don’t know what it is like to be treated equal to that of men, so they still expect to be treated as women on a pedestal. They also tend to struggle in the fitness category. Anyone who tells you strength doesn’t matter is a moron or comes from a different branch of service. I don’t recall seeing very many women hefty a 27lb machine gun with a pack in excess of 80lbs through the mountains for 12-20 miles. I do recall seeing a lot of women fall out of a simple 3-mile hike carrying nothing more than a backpack and get put into the back of a humvee. Don’t worry, some men fell out too. Those guys were humiliated relentlessly for it too.

Both my parents were airmen. This was during a time when women couldn’t serve in combat roles. My dad did CAS, my mom wanted to do CAS too, but couldn’t.

Her proficiency test showed she’d be the best navigator a squadron could have. So she was.

She tried to be a navigator for one of the gunships.

    Combat vehicle. Combat role. Can’t.

So she settled on the refueling retrofits and met my dad over the boom mic.

After my dad aged out of the skies as a full bird and my brother and I grew up some, he simply said to us one day:

*”There are some women I’d rather have at my side in war than most men. Your mom’s one of them.”*

Do they need to be part of the draft? I don’t think so.

Should they be able to blow shit up with the rest of us if they have what it takes? Of course. We’re wasting talent otherwise.

Give them the freedom to choose that path. Few will walk it, few will make it to the end, and that’s fine. Few men will too.

    But that’s what liberty is.

Well someone has to ask. Are we talking about hot women or not so hot? It matters.

Intelligent and fit. Definitely a turn on when I served with them. More attractive than the general population. Years later my daughter’s friend told us how safe she felt while on patrol in Baghdad. Maybe not in an active combat zone but they aren’t exactly in no danger.

Is it true enlisted women get pregnant for the purpose of getting the easier jobs?

I served in the Marines for 7 years. Met some great female/woman Marines, met some that I’m sure were ASVAB waivers. Just like any other job, but in uniform.

  16. zmurds40 Avatar

Some of them were really cool and great additions to the units I was in. Others were not. The same can be said for dudes though. The key is meeting the standards and looking out for the other people in your unit.

You’re just watching divisive nonsense on the internet. You must keep in mind it’s the internet, which is not real life.

  18. Temporary-Truth2048 Avatar

Very very few people in the military see active combat. Your question is too broad and the views of men on women in specific job roles changes significantly depending on the job. A female in an infantry or engineering platoon is likely to experience much greater animosity than a female in intelligence, cyber, or medical.

If you want to learn more about a badass woman attached to a special operations team in real combat situations I would recommend reading up on Chief Shannon Kent.

No one ever cared when I was in. I wasn’t infantry but we never cared. Plus not like infantry is the only ones who see combat.

Not in military, but them btches scare and excite me in a way it’s hard to quantify. Needless to say I wouldn’t pick a fight with one, would trust one to protect the fuck out of me if it came down to that for some reason, and I trust they wouldn’t get the uniform unless they earned the uniform. 99.9% of anything else you read is probably the 10% of any population that are assholes speaking up. Women in ANY* traditionally ‘male’ dominated industry have to be physically, emotionally, and intellectually resilient, and still face way more flack and implicit danger, just because they’re women.
