Bought a rural Texas home and can’t shake this weird feeling about why the seller really moved

r/

Hey everyone. Just wanted to share something that’s been bugging me, and maybe get some outside perspective.

I’m originally from the Houston area but had moved to California for work. Recently, my wife and I decided to come back home to Texas and found a property we really liked a house on about 10 acres in a rural area.

During the buying process, I asked my realtor why the seller was moving. She said the seller’s agent told her it was just a “vacation home.” But that didn’t make much sense to me. The house had cattle, and it was clear during our walkthrough that someone had been living there full-time, it looked like an active homestead, not a weekend getaway.

We loved the property though, so we moved forward. After we closed and already had the keys, I still couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. So I had my realtor ask again and this time, the seller’s agent responded that “she’s not able to share that information.”

At that point, it was too late to change anything the deal was done. But the sudden change in tone and refusal to answer left a weird taste in my mouth.

Has anyone else experienced something like this when buying a home? Am I looking to deep into this, or is this kind of thing a sign of something more?

Edit: I forgot to mention they only lived there for a year before selling the home

Trust your gut. People don’t abandon active homesteads without a reason. Dig deeper with the neighbors because sometimes the secrets a seller leaves behind are the ones that matter most.

You’re not going to tell a stranger who is buying your house if your life is falling apart due to financial issues or a relationship breakdown. She could have been experiencing DV and in danger or had serious health issues and had to move somewhere that was less upkeep. If the property has had all the required safety and structural checks and passed, it’s not really any of your business.

Silly question but have you googled the owners? You’d be surprised what you can find. Id personally want to know especially after the realtor said they can’t share it.

It’s strange but in Texas realtors are not allowed to disclose the motivations of sellers. I would ask some folks in the nearest town; people at the grain store and closest neighbors in particular. I would also research the property and previous owner online. I would be curious about my properties history too! To me, a property’s history is very important🌺

Realtors work on their reputation, leave your realtor a 3 star review.

Raising cattle is not a hobby. It’s a full time back breaking job. Maybe it was just to much for them.

Be happy with your new home and don’t overthink it.

I think you’re looking into it too much. There could be an array of reasons they sold. Divorce, death, upkeep too expensive, location, relocate for a job etc. People jump the gun and buy a property without thinking at times.

Most likely, the previous owner, ran into some financial problems. But I hope you had it thoroughly inspected.

Did you get an inspection? Was it underpriced?

Could have been a divorce sale.
