I’m making this post because, since 2009, I’ve been searching for a song I could never find, try as I might. Now that it’s been more than a decade, I thought, “Hey, maybe Reddit can help me out.”
I heard it in a homemade video, which I no longer have. It was playing in the background.
This song definitely seems to be from the 1990s, or at the very latest, the early 2000s. It initially struck me as R&B, but after downloading and listening to so many R&B female artists, I’m beginning to think it might belong to another genre, like Pop with an R&B twist to it.
I don’t know if the singer is a black or white woman, but it’s definitely a woman. It may even be two women singing, or just one singer layering her own vocals.
The song has a ballad-like quality and is in a minor key.
It starts with some kind of keyboard instrument—something that sounds like an electronic harpsichord (?), but not quite. The song begins with a melodic, syncopated rhythm line from this keyboard instrument and bass.
From what I could make out of the lyrics (since it was playing in the background), they go something like this:
“Tell me what’s wrong, unless…
Tell me what’s wrong, it seems that…
Closer to you, I… I never thought it would be like and I…
How can I …? I wanna feel it too…
I got so lost [or high]. . . Baby.
Loving you again…”
I know this doesn’t help much, but bear in mind it was a song playing in the background and there were people talking in the video. So this is all I could discern from the lyrics.
The singer has a very smooth voice. It’s one of the most lovely and saddest love songs I’ve ever heard. As the years go by without finding it, I feel this growing agony, like, “Oh no, I’m gonna die someday without ever knowing what that song was.”
When I first started my search, I thought it might be a song by The Cover Girls because the singer’s voice so closely resembles theirs—especially in Wishing on a Star and on their last album, Satisfy. So I listened to their entire discography, but sadly it’s not them.
If it is a R&B singer, I would say it’s not a cliché, but a song on a level of its own. Because after years of downloading many R&B albuns you kind of start noticing patterns.
So, if anyone can help me, keep in mind that the singer’s voice sounds very similar to The Cover Girls.
Since I started searching for this song, I’ve discovered many great artists from the late ’80s and ’90s, but I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. I really hope someone here on Reddit can help me.
Summary of what I remember:
Probable time period: 1990s (likely 1994-1998)
Probable genre: R&B, Pop (?)
Singer: Female artist.

P.S – Before I lost the video in 2023, I tried using Shazam on it and didn’t yield any results.
I also never heard this song playing on any movies, series, sitcoms or commercials, which means it’s a hidden gem.
