Wireless charging is ass

r/

Why would I want slow ass charging speed, and be more limited on how I can use my phone while it’s doing the charging, while also spending longer aligning the thing than I would with a cable (assuming not magsafe for the last one).

Its just stupid.

I don’t like how it heats up my phone.

  3. No-Environment6103 Avatar

Not slow. Also is great if your charging port is not working.

  4. Kapoik Avatar

Idk how this is unpopular… I gave up on it immediately once I needed to take my cover off for it to work and even then it was lile 2.4 hours til charged I was like nope

  5. Bandro Avatar

I just slap my phone on the magnet thingy when I go to bed and it doesn’t wear out a cable or charging port. I don’t care how slowly it happens and I’m asleep anyway.

  6. Affectionate-Key-265 Avatar

I always figured it was for if you aren’t using your phone like when you are sleeping or working. It can just sit on your desk so you dont have to plug it in every time.

  7. Dexember69 Avatar

I dislike those wireless charging pads. At first I thought ‘fuck yeah how cool is that’

And then I realised I can’t lay in bed and use my phone while it’s charging. Kinda useless

  8. Available-Monk-6941 Avatar

Most people don’t use their phone while it’s charging, they charge it overnight and then don’t use it enough to need to charge it again till they go back to sleep

  9. Cheeetooos Avatar

I like MagSafe charging a lot, but otherwise don’t care for wireless charging. I have a charging stand on my desk and my night stand. Just gives my phone a place to live while charging and it all is very neat and tidy.

  10. ButtholeSurfur Avatar

I use one overnight. Completely fine when it’s dark, I don’t want to find a cord and I know my phone has 6-7+ hours to charge.

Haven’t had a corded charger in my room in years.

  11. Efficient-Bedroom797 Avatar

It’s great if your charging port is compromised or broke

  12. OssiferNymiu Avatar

Game changing option for me cause my port is always full of lint packed down until it’s unusable. I throw my phone on it before bed with 100% success and it’s charged in the morning for the day.

  13. DominicPalladino Avatar

I have a wireless charger by my bed and another by my work desk. I set the phone one it when I’m not using it. It charges. When I need to use it or get up to go somewhere, no cable to get in the way or unplug.

    Slower than wired? Yes.

    Does it matter? Not usually.

  14. ManoliTee Avatar

They’re rubbish. Wired all the way.

Only thing I’d probably use is a backup battery in the phone case but they’re massive.

  15. -c-black- Avatar

I learned this about 8 years ago.

  16. azuth89 Avatar

Its rhe name that gets me.

    “Wireless charging!”

“Woah, wireless? Like wifi, I can just handle and use it like normal while it does its thing?”

“Well, no. It has to be in contact with this chunky thing in a very specific spot”

    “But….that thing has a wire”

    “….”

Nah, I’d rather just use the plug.

  17. robprobasco Avatar

I use mine on a night stand to charge my phone every night. It’s a combo wireless watch/phone charger. I charge both while I shower/get ready and they are both at 100% when I gather my things for the day. Sometimes, I have to drink my coffee before it’s fully charged.
    Edit for clarity

  18. krom0025 Avatar

The wireless charger in my car is amazing. I’m only using hands free while driving and all I have to do is set my phone down when I get in my car and it starts charging while I drive.

  19. Maximumoverdrive76 Avatar

I actually have a built in wireless charger in my recliner. It came with it. I find it very useful. If phone is low I just drop it in there and over the time I watch a movie or do some YT etc. It has charged up quite far and at time to full from low charge. Yes it take a lot longer. But I don’t need a cord or place my phone away from me. If someone text etc I can just grab the phone. It also kind of acts like a phone holder being out of the way.

I think newer phones have faster wireless charging as well. But perhaps that is also limited to the wireless charger capabilities too?

  20. RightHabit Avatar

You just haven’t found a good use for it yet.
For me, one of the best uses is a wireless charging mount in the car. It automatically grips my phone when I place it on the mount, securing it and aligning it perfectly for charging. No plugging unplugging so it only takes one hand.

  21. deeeep_fried Avatar

I just use magsafe. Then I can point the cable any way I want if I’m sitting down on my phone, or even if I’m at my desk and don’t want the phone wire getting in the way. Just being able to not have it sticking out of my phone is reason enough for me to use it

  22. wawasan2020BC Avatar

Wireless charging is the one thing that saved my old phone from becoming paperweight after the USB-C port broke. Implied is that it also reduces strain on the port on phones.

Plus wireless charging can also be fast (e.g. OnePlus 50W) although 15W Qi2 still sucks.

Plus it’s good for devices like smart watches cuz of ingress protection, and pogo pins suck plus the charger adds extra weight to carry on. Meanwhile you can reverse wireless charge your watch from your phone which is very handy for extended travel without carrying another charging dongle.

  23. Girl_Power55 Avatar

I like having all charging choices available at all times

  24. MillerisLord Avatar

Great for working in dirty environments. I work in a machine shop and I would get crap in the port all the time, now I put a plastic dust cover in the port and use wireless.

  25. limeybeaver69 Avatar

I only started using wireless charging when my charging port broke. But otherwise I just use a cable.

  26. battlejess Avatar

The biggest benefit for me is less clutter from multiple charging cables on my desk. My wireless charger is built into my lamp. Nice and tidy!

  27. Jordangander Avatar

I have a regular wireless charger that sits on the counter. Put the phone down and if it doesn’t light up shift a little until it does. May 2 seconds max?

I also have a wireless charger in the center console of my truck. I can just drop the phone on it and it will charge while driving.

  28. Rocktamus1 Avatar

The only pro is the chargers dont break. Wires easily fall apart. Even Anker onss

  29. CopeH1984 Avatar

It’s pretty convenient for driving. Just put your phone in your mount and it charges thoughtlessly

  30. KnotBeanie Avatar

When I sit at my desk I pop it on the charger and keep it topped off, I always set my phone down in the same few spots, I just set my phone down in my car, and still charges the phone while navigating and streaming music in CarPlay.

Yeah its slow, but I just always set it down on a charger when I’m not using it. I’m able to use the same chargers for both of my airpods (one is lightning one is usbc) and most recent phones despite the port type.

  31. slap__happy Avatar

For when your charging port is broken. For when you place it in the magnetic holder in your car, it will charge at the same time. Calm down bro

  32. Nate_and_Bake Avatar

Heat is also the worst thing for batteries, and wireless charging generates a lot of it.

  33. longpheu Avatar

i’ll play the devil’s advocate and say that wireless power banks (MagSafe ones) with 10,000mah can be useful for trips. Saves the hassle of bringing cables which can break when you continuously pulling it in and out of your pocket.

  34. Noktomezo175 Avatar

It’s actually useful in public areas where you can just set it down to charge a bit and not worry about the cord. Funny thing, most new slot machines at casinos have a wireless pad built into them. And they are common at airports.

  35. Kyru117 Avatar

I have a wireless charging bank, sits in my pockets, keeps my phone going through an entire day of work, and no fiddling with a cable in my pocket

  36. Fork-Cartel Avatar

I have a wireless charging stand on my desk. It’s perfect.

  37. ZombieGroan Avatar

I use a wireless charging stand so I can watch YouTube while playing games or doing work etc.

  38. de9ausser Avatar

But if you have an android you can pull the old wireless charging trick on your iPhone friends that they really haaaaate

  39. lVloogie Avatar

You should have one in case your charging port breaks. It has saved my ass on vacation when my phone took a swim.

  40. FrankSinatraCockRock Avatar

I think it’s great, especially on phone mounts( unless it’s the summer)

  41. GingerScourge Avatar

I have a wireless charger that holds the phone up (not a pad on a desk) that I only use when I’m sleeping. Perfect for that. I don’t need the fast charge. Being off the surface means it cools a lot better. I agree, wireless charging in most cases is stupid, but is perfect for this particular use case.

  42. Kirome Avatar

I would agree but sometimes the situation calls for it.

The charging port on my old phone is broken/doesn’t work anymore, so I charge it using that Qi charging shit.

  43. ProphetsOfAshes Avatar

I agree, but it saved me on my last phone when my charging port stopped working

  44. alanmooresbarber Avatar

Wireless charging is new, but like all technologies it’ll become better and more versatile in the future. Let’s say hypothetically, it advances to the point that a device doesn’t have to be in contact with the charger, just in close proximity. When you get home in your electric car you just park above a charging mat and go inside. You won’t have to plug in the car. You won’t ever forget to charge the car, because all you need to do is park. There could be desks that charge laptops, a device next to your game console that charges your controllers, etc. We need tech geeks to buy the gimmicky chargers now to make it worthwhile for companies to develop better ones in the future. And like a lot of other people in this thread, my charging port is broken. My phone would have become e-waste years ago if I didn’t have the option to charge wirelessly, so you could argue there’s an environmental benefit too.

  45. Jotacon8 Avatar

I very rarely ever plug my phone in anymore to charge. Usually I only do it if I’m low from forgetting to charge it over night or from heavy use while out and about and need a fast top up, but I never get it low enough through normal every day use to ever even need to charge more than once overnight, and for that I just stick the phone on my MagSafe charger in a second and go to sleep. No fussing with cables to plug it in. And I just grab it and go in the morning.

I also have a wireless charger at my desk at home and work and can just set it down to charge while I’m not using it. So I almost never have a need to ever plug it in throughout the day.

    🤷🏼‍♂️

  46. Big-Vegetable-8425 Avatar

I agree. I miss the days when I could do a quick zap for a few minutes before leaving the house and get a substantial charge in. Now, I sometimes only get a couple percent with a twenty minute “quick” charge in a pinch.

  47. garypal247 Avatar

Like others say it’s great when I’m asleep, or working and don’t need to be on my phone. I actually despise having to plug a charger in

  48. someone_who_exists69 Avatar

It’s good for when you aren’t using it for a while, like one at a desk or bed, since time or usage doesn’t matter, and it can be removed without any chance for damage, since you just yank it compared to a cord.

  49. jtscira Avatar

Wireless charging is the only reason I’m still able to use my phone. USB connection doesn’t work anymore.

  50. InfaReddSweeTs Avatar

I have 80w wireless charging, because I am not an Apple sheep. Nothing slow about that.

  51. fmaa Avatar

I like the standby mode on the iphones while I head to bed, looks and works like a digital clock which is pretty cool

  52. oregondude79 Avatar

My cheap ass had a phone a few years back that wouldn’t charge with a power cord but it would charge with the wireless pads. I got a good 8-12 months more out of that piece of crap phone before it finally died. I won’t bash wireless charging.

  53. Firstevertrex Avatar

I just have mine beside my pc when I’m working or gaming I just pop it on there. No need to think, haven’t noticed a difference in speed, but its also there most the day while I’m working so it’s always topped up.

  54. New-Grapefruit1737 Avatar

Well it allows me to leave the lint in the port 😉

  55. Ingi_Pingi Avatar

My phones charging port is broken so it’s actually very useful rn

  56. slapfunk79 Avatar

I have a samsung as my Personal phone and work provides me with an iPhone. I use a wireless charger and drop one off to charge while I use the other one. Outside of that slight convenience of not needing more than 1 charger I don’t really see much benefit of having a wireless charging pad.

  57. random_7485 Avatar

Wireless charging in cars is even worse as most pads don’t have enough circulation to counter the heat generated.

If you’re using CarPlay or Android Auto, it just overheats.

  58. 20draws10 Avatar

There is a certain convenience to the ease of use. Particularly with the magnetic chargers that also hold your phone. In the car I plop it on the holder and it’s just charging. At my desk I put it on my holder, that holds it at a nice angle so I can see notifications coming in, and it keeps it charged. In bed it just sits on my nightstand charging slowly. Because I have it frequently charging through the day I usually end my day with around 80% battery. I very rarely even think about charging my phone. Is it worse for the battery, a little. Do I care, no because it’s just charging so frequently through the day that it doesn’t matter if my batteries max capacity is at 90% or 87% after 2 years.

Any mechanical movement or connection is a potential point of failure. You can only use it so many times before it wears out or fails. I’ve had multiple phones where the charging port has failed.

That being said if I need to charge quickly or are travelling, I plug it in. There’s a use case for both and pros and cons for both. Just because it doesn’t fit your use case doesn’t mean it isn’t useful.

  59. Neat-Substance-9274 Avatar

My iPhone charges just as fast with the wireless chargers I have. I have one mounted to my my car that plugs into a usb c port with a strong magnet. It will charge it completely during a 1/2 hour commute. Buy better stuff.

  60. razzberry_mango Avatar

I love my wireless charging pad on my gaming desk

  61. FlameStaag Avatar

If you wanna do it fast just put it on an induction stove

  62. Begley291 Avatar

Agree. I don’t feel any need to buy a wireless charger. I have a 20w wall charger, it charges my phone fast, I plug it in before I go to bed, and it’s fine. Wireless charging generates more heat, charges slower, and I just don’t see any advantage in it for me personally.

  63. TheFallingWhale Avatar

Its for when u manage to fuxk up your charging port

  64. roundtwentythree Avatar

Awesome for desk use, can just set your phone down and bam, it’s charging.

In your car you can charge wirelessly and still use wireless android auto or w/e apples version of that is. Keeps the tangle of cables to a minimum.

Lastly, and this is much less of an issue then it used to be since USB c is much better designed than micro, not only do you not have to worry about the orientation of the plug, you don’t have to worry about plugging it in at. Also wireless charging increases the longevity of your battery due to the slower charging speeds and it increases the lifespan of the port on your phone (reduced concerned on USB c equipped phones because again, better designed).

“Your charging port is wet, please allow to dry before charging.” Charging port wet?? Who cares! Just set it down.

If you say you can’t see a benefit for it then frankly that makes me believe you’re being intentionally obtuse lol

  65. IamFilthyCasual Avatar

I use wireless when sleeping. Its easier to slap it on the MagSafe and take it off while half asleep – I don’t have to worry about the cable at all. Whenever else I use cable but that only really happens when I’m driving anyway, like 1-2x a week I need to top up throughout the day. I like the wireless charging function, I find it convenient even tho its slower

  66. Active-Task-6970 Avatar

I use wireless charging next to the bed when I go to sleep, and also in the car whilst driving. Phone automatically connects to CarPlay wirelessly and charges so a win/win.

  67. WrongdoerIll5187 Avatar

It’s passive. I have one in the bedroom and one where I set my keys. You don’t need your phone right now? Set it down. It’s always full and convenient and my AirPods are right there too.

  68. BokChoyFantasy Avatar

I use wireless charging when I’m at home when it doesn’t matter how slow charging is.

  69. Exciting_Strike5598 Avatar

True, its too slow and heats up the phone like iron box 🗃️

  70. Phoenix-624 Avatar

I dont know about that, on my two previous phones the first thing to stop working properly was the charging port. My previous phone was the only one that had wireless charging, and i was able to keep using that phone for an extra year or two because of it.

  71. JRPGsAreForMe Avatar

When I have a USB-C to HDMI cable plugged in to play games on my TV the wireless fast charging works great. Maybe spend more than $10 for a decent charger.

My phone is at 38% and I just did a comparison. 1h 38m fast wireless, 1h 8m fast cable, 1h 32m regular cable, and 4h 52m slow charge.

I hate that I plug a USB-C in one way and it does a regular charge and flipping it drops it to a slow charge.

And how cable chargers always eventually shit out even if there are no visible breaks or kinks anywhere. My Samsung C to C cable is in perfect condition but unless the cable is sitting just right it stutter charges on any device I plug in (2 Samsung phones or an XBOX contoller) aside from my battery bank (Monoprice brand).

  72. Immudzen Avatar

I used to think this but then I found some GREAT usage cases. I have an ebike with a phone dock and it has wireless charging. I can just connect my phone for navigation and keeping track of the trip and it automatically stays charged up without any wires. It is GREAT for trips. My old phone used to drain fairly fast keeping the screen on like that for hours during a ride.

  73. Mastuh Avatar

My charger port got damaged so it’s the only way I can do it

  74. ISUXLR Avatar

I hate the heating up part but on a border sense all tech is shit when they are at their infancy.

  75. Vismajor92 Avatar

I use wireless in my car with my phoneholder, work wonders. Also i have one on my nightstand, cut in the dark i don’t want to struggle with a cable, i just put my phone on my stand and when i wake up the phone is full

  76. mostfantasticgrape Avatar

I get warp charging with OnePlus wireless charging, so it charges my whole phone in about 30m or so, so not sure where you’re getting that it’s slower.

  77. RealWalkingbeard Avatar

The USB ports on phones are consistently poor quality. Long before my battery died, the USB port becomes near unusable. It’s not just that they fill up with fluff – that can be removed – but that they don’t secure the cable they way they do on other products.

My wireless charger will give me enough juice to get through the day in about 40 minutes. That’s not as good as the cable, but it’s good enough, and it saves the USB port for emergencies.

  78. youtheotube2 Avatar

I pretty much exclusively use wireless charging at this point. I only have to plug in my phone for fast charging maybe once a month or so when I use my phone more often than usual.

I wireless charge it at night, wireless charge it in my car when I’m driving, I have a MagSafe puck on my desk at work that I usually throw my AirPods on to stay charged

  79. Pouvla Avatar

You can take it out of ur pocket and put it on the charger without using a cord.

If u use a cord its still real annoying to speak to people on the phone – assuming u have a brain and hold the phone to ur ear and not talk to ur phone in front of ur face.

  80. 1_2_3__- Avatar

I have had situations where i did not bring a charger and wireless charging from my friends phone to mine was really helpful.

  81. AbradolfLincler77 Avatar

This post just shows how attached to your phone you and most people are. It’s nice to put it down and forget about it for a couple of hours a day.

  82. Hayashida-was-here Avatar

My kids ruined the charge port, it is nice to just set it on the charging pad and it charges.

Plus my at the time 2 year old could put it on the pad the first time and it charged.

My charging pad by the bed holds it at an angle so I can put it on the pad and look at it if I want to and don’t have to hassle with a cord while tired and sleep deprived and no glasses. Very handy and useful.

Plus fast charging is bad for the battery, my phone is 6 years old too.

I have mount that attaches to the vent on your car and it holds the phone so you can use the GPS and has a charging pad so boom, place and go while charging. Easy

  83. bythebeardofmatt Avatar

I have been using wireless charging for months now, and it’s been a blessing in disguise. My charging port is broken so plugs don’t work. It prevents me from using my phone in bed at night, which is always a plus.

  84. notori0usbig Avatar

I have 2 iphones (1 for work 1 for myself) with different usbs, so I just use wireless charing for both

  85. KofFinland Avatar

The limitation of lifetime of phone is the USB charging port. After N connect-disconnect cycles it will break. That killed my previous phone.

So now I have one with wireless charging.

  86. etherZeal Avatar

For charging my phone fast – yes, it sucks. For a magnetic phone stand in my car, for a magnetic charging station next to my bed – it’s amazing.

  87. BionisGuy Avatar

Last phone i had was the first phone i have ever had with wireless charging.

Used it two times and then realized i rather just plug in the cable to quickly charge it instead of it slowly charging.

Wireless charging honestly feels like a gimmick

  88. popornrm Avatar

Slower, less efficient, more heat generation so it destroys your battery much faster. Truly stupid to be using it daily when plugging in is better in practically every way

  89. OkIndependent1667 Avatar

Yeah i was surprised at how slow it was too but i dock my phone on my desk and i can see notifications at a glance without having to reach over and mess about with unplugging my phone

  90. CountTruffula Avatar

It does seem like one of those useless accessories like the smart ovens or touch screen microwaves

  91. trytrymyguy Avatar

I could be wrong but I think wireless is easier on the battery since it doesn’t generate as much heat. In other words, you’re potentially extending the life and charge capacity. (Again, provided I’m remembering correctly)

  92. GamingReviews_YT Avatar

We bought a brand new Citroën C3 which has wireless charging for Android auto and CarPlay, and literally within 20min of our first drive the car sent notice that the phone had to stop charging due to overheating. It’s complete garbage technology.

  93. Offnschaedl Avatar

    Cable charging is stupid.

Why would i want ultra fast charging speed that might damage the battery if I charge my phine overnight anyway?

Also the ports get wirn out and eventually I run the risk of waking up with an almost empty phone because it hadnt charged overnight.

(Ps:in reality both have value I’d like a phone that can do both pls)

  94. herpderp411 Avatar

Fast charging degrades battery life faster, I always slow charge my phone for that reason…and I don’t use wireless
