Saying “it’s just my opinion” doesn’t mean you are not wrong

r/

Why is it, when someone says something objectively wrong and someone corrects them, they hit them with the “it’s just my opinion”? Or they think saying “it’s just my opinion” excuses them of any criticism.

Yes, it’s just weasel-language used to get out of an uncomfortable conversation without taking any responsibility. Like that phrase “Agree to disagree”. When I’m in disagreement about something I’m to disagree – no agreement or blessing required from the opponent. They can either continue to argue their side or not, but I’m not going to affirm their side, which I disagree with.

Because most people are not able to accept the ego-shattering reality of them being wrong. They’d rather say that than change their stance at all, which is stupid because that is how you improve your position and iron out the kinks.

    I’m sorry, you’re correct

Actually in Canada 🇨🇦columnists will frequently say “in my opinion” in print newspapers. It protects them from libel and it is called “fair comment “.

This is NOT an unpopular opinion, it’s just my opinion though

An opinion can be correct. If I say that I believe avocados are the worst food on the planet. Well, in my brain it’s correct, and you might think differently and be wrong in my head.

Depends? I mean, can you really be objectively wrong in a genuine opinion?
And I mean things like “I prefer cookies to cake” or “I don’t like the colour orange all that much”, not bigotry disguised as an opinion.

Because they don’t know what an opinion is, or because unless you can prove them objectively wrong then because no matter how stupid they are that’s technically true

A believe is not an opinion. If you have no idea about something, you cannot have an opinion about it.

When you are talking about media, there is no such thing as the media being objectively good or bad.

And opinions cannot be wrong by definition.
