Creating a character for a Mutants and Masterminds game with very similar powers to them (the ability to charge inorganic matter with Kinetic energy), and thought of a cool way to go all out in case of being backed against a corner.
Could a character with these powers hypothetically charge air or gas in general with such explosive energy?

if i remember correctly both needed solid objects
if you push the power to the absurd and focus that energy into a single atom
Those two characters in particular need a solid physical object to charge. I’m not aware of any instance where they were able to charge air or any gasses or fluids.
The problem with their powers is that air, or gas, isn’t a solid object. Yes, it’s made up of a bunch of molecules, but those are constantly moving around just from you breathing, to say nothing of wind or whatever else is going on. So they won’t be able to charge a bunch of smaller molecules in the same way or nearly as efficiently as they would be able to charge a card, a rock, or whatever.
They probably can, but not to any useful effect, it might create a cool crackly light show around their hands but the air would be so diffuse that they wouldn’t be able to transfer any meaningful amount of energy to it before it moves away.
