TIFU by spraying a wasp with bug spray

r/

Cat-sitting for my friend at the moment and, I don’t know if it’s just from being deep in the countryside, but I’ve never dealt with this many flies and other insects coming into the house. Don’t like killing anything but at a certain point, house flies are just unhygienic so I got some fly spray. Within an hour, a wasp came in and wasn’t getting out out my face, so I whipped out the spray. In the past when I’ve sprayed wasps, they drunkenly fly away, bounce into a few walls and then die somewhere. Confidently armed with the spray, I let it rip on who I thought would be the only victim. Seemingly gaining sentience, the wasp turned to me.

The following events happened in a matter of seconds but, to me, lasted a lifetime. The wasp made a bee-line (no pun intended) for my face. I was uncomfortable but thought it was just confused. However it then went directly into my ear. I threw my head around screeching, making movements which would usually deter a wasp, but this one knew what it wanted. The buzzing and fumbling around in my ear intensified in a way which is haunting me hours later until I felt a hot agonising sting to the inside of my ear. It flew away leaving me clutching my ear. I had to peel the dislodged stinger and I’m currently sat with an icepack to my ear. The way it came straight for me with such intention is still repeating in my mind. Perhaps it was karma- I did try to kill it after all.

TL;DR: Sprayed a wasp and recieved punishment to my inner ear.

Man, I wouldn’t wish what happened to you on my worst enemy. Sorry that happened to you. Ice it and maybe show a doctor/the er?

If it left the stinger it was no wasp. And then you shouldn’t have tried to kill it. Karma.

Yeah, I’ve learned that if you don’t bother them, they’ll generally leave you alone. Otherwise, you’d better have some actual wasp spray handy.

Best way to kill wasps is scrubbing bubbles bathroom cleaner. The foam keeps them from flying and it kills them nearly as fast as actual bug spray

I’m very sorry that happened to you. I usually let them out with a glass and a piece of paper. Fortunately I haven’t had many.

Couple of weeks back there was a big fly in my room so I got the spray can and sent a big jet directly at it. I didn’t see it after that. It was only later that I realised I’d sprayed it with lighter fuel rather than insecticide. Good thing there were no ignition sources around!
