Mel Brooks sucks

r/

I’ll catch hell for it, I know. But my family, my husband everyone loves this idiot and his stupid movies. I just sat through “life stinks” and listened to my husband laugh and laugh. Not one thing is funny. Terrible acting. It’s all so dumb. And this is a comedy genius? Honestly random strangers are funnier. Maybe I’m missing something

this is ludacris. probably the best post ive seen on this sub

  5. Disco_Lamb Avatar

I’ll give you that a good % of his material hasn’t aged well, and he’s also always been hit or miss. But when he hits, he tends to really hit.

He also swings wildly between just stupid humor, and using stupid humor to say something actually intelligent, which can get easily lost in translation if you don’t like stupid humor.

Definitely not for everyone, and definitely comes with a disclaimer these days.

  6. Secure_Pizza_1026 Avatar

You’re definitely missing something. Mel Brooks has been a gift to humanity, his work is epic. Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and Spaceballs… some of the greatest comedies ever made. You get my upvote for this terrible opinion.

  7. Rushguy Avatar

Not going to rain hellfire on you, and here’s an upvote for an unpopular opinion. Try History of the World Part 1 and see if your opinion evolves. Also, Young Frankenstein is beautiful and brilliant. Brooks also created and wrote the original Get Smart show and that was pretty friggin funny.

I get it. Brooks has always bobbed and weaved back and forth from witful satire to juvenile slapstick with reckless abandon. It also never hurt him that great actors with impeccable comedic timing and grace were always on board as well.

But you’re wrong. Mel Brooks is one of the greatest entertainers and filmmakers in hollywood history, and in terms of whether he is funny or not, you’re definitely in a small minority there.

I feel like you were looking for something with high production value and highbrow comedy. Apparently you didn’t understand that this was all low brow comedy and basically everything he’s made is a satire of whatever the topic is and of itself.

But not all comedy is for everybody. I feel like you have to be able to laugh at yourself in the world around you to enjoy Mel Brooks, could just be me though.

Life Stinks is such an underrated movie. Still funny to this day and more relevant than ever in this political climate.

For those who haven’t seen it: “A filthy-rich businessman bets a corporate rival that he can live on the streets of L.A. without the comforts of home or money, but it proves to be tougher than he thought.” -imdb

  34. OhTheHueManatee Avatar

I love Spaceballs, like parts of Blazing Saddles and find the Gene Hackman scene in Young Frankenstein funny as Hell (the rest of the movie is boring) but otherwise I think he’s crazy overrated. I enjoy tons of spoof movies too but he’s stuff just doesn’t work on me for some reason.

  75. Noonewantsyourapp Avatar

I feel like the key to enjoying (a lot of) Brooks’ films is to see it for the first time when you’re 10-13. That way the silly childish jokes land, then you can coast on nostalgia when re-watching.

If you’re not in the right mood for it the dumb jokes can feel, well, dumb, to the extent that you don’t enjoy the cleverer jokes.

And I say this as someone who has a lot of time for Mel Brooks and his contributions to comedy. Hearing him speak about why he felt certain historical figures were appropriate comedy fodder in the producers is an interesting perspective, especially given how recent the war was at the time.

  76. Bawlmerian21228 Avatar

  84. Altfuckeagames Avatar

This is the best unpopular opinion I’ve seen in a while. Awful opinion. Upvote.

  85. caryscott1 Avatar

Not everyone has a sense of humour. No need to wonder, it’s a you problem. “Life Stinks” isn’t the best example of Brooks work, however.

  86. GD-20C Avatar

I would suggest that you are failing to consider the social circumstances from which the movies were made. There are people who do not see the glorious aspects of movies like Citizen Kane, or the thrilling aspects of Psycho, because of the improvements of special effects and essentially other movies copying them for decades. They have become easy to figure out, or passe, but at the time they were released they were cutting edge and were pushing the limits of cinema. Mel Brooks was willing to push boundaries and tackle issues that others were too scared to do. When these movies came out there was controversy to the point of outrage by some. He was taking shots at social norms and poking fun at influential people, things that movies today do not have the guts to do. Some people don’t see the humour because people like Brooks blazed trails and society has evolved so much because of it, that we don’t even see the genius anymore. This can be said of many trailblazers like Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, All in the Family, MASH, Maude, etc.

  92. SnoLeppard13 Avatar

You’re objectively wrong. Idk how but you are

  93. Ok-Jellyfish2013 Avatar

I would say that Mel Brooks has made three films that are among the greatest comedies ever.

“Young Frankenstein”, “Blazing Saddles” and “High Anxiety”, all of which are parodies and very well-done. I could re-watch those three multiple times.

“History of the World” is good, as well.

Beyond that, there’s a big drop off to the watchable (“The Producers”, which is a bit over-rated in my opinion, and “Spaceballs” which is very over-rated) and then a huge drop to things like “Life Stinks” and “Dracula: Dead and Loving It” (both of which are abysmal).

But then, comedy is so incredibly subjective. Both Adam Sandler and the Three Stooges have never made me laugh once.

  94. Dangerous-Set-9964 Avatar

Now I get it! 💡 THIS is how you karma farm!

  96. Ok_Steak2523 Avatar

Take my upvote, the stooges suck too

  97. Horsebreakr Avatar

I get it, but for different reasons. I wouldn’t say nothing is funny about it, or that the setup’s like the “terrible acting, and dumb rhetoric” is only over acting that actually makes the jokes seem forced, but I would say out-dated, or at least over rated. Outdated not because of the jokes made, but the slow pacing of older movies dialogue itself.

Like when you compare it to something like Arrested Development, and after YEARS and multiple rewatches, only to have some stranger on the internet point out, that GOB rides his Segway every time there is another SEGWAY into another PLOT, or just the speed and constant dialogue, it’s like apples to oranges.

His movies are funny, but not knee slapping, 10/10 timeless funny I would be dragging family members in to see it.

It does have that social barrier though also, where people will defend it, without even seeing it. I remember kids saying they loved it, but never seen it. Like “The Godfather”, guys will give it so much praise, but because of the age, it feels like a 7/10 or 6/10 movie.

  98. CrystalAndyCatt Avatar

I think it’s a ‘male’ thing, mostly. I’ve noticed most women also hate Austin Powers and The 3 Stooges and so on. Nod gonna defend it but I do understand it, kinda like over-the-top psychotic and outrageous yet still well-meaning and warmly intended at the heart of it all. So it’s not necessarily as bad nor even as stupid as it appears. Mel Brooks actually does some very socially relevant & scathing satire underneath the idiocy, if you really pay attention. But like I said, I don’t blame you for hating it & a lot of it really seems almost drunken subconscious in origin!
