SPF Suncream is one of, if not THE greatest invention of mankind

r/

The sun can burn our skin and give us cancer. The best way to avoid this is by avoiding prolonged exposure, either by shade or by directly covering your skin with clothing.

Suncream is a liquid that mimics what a solid thing can do regarding sun protection. If you wear SPF 50 on your whole torso and reapply a few times in a day, you will get almost as good protection as if you wore a full jumper or sat in the shade.

That we have created a malleable nonvolatile liquid substance that achieves this, blocking UV rays that damage the skin and is invisible when properly applied. The fact that it exists for a price that everyone can afford, is something that genuinely blows my mind. Its like a biomechanical marvel (almost) and a complete solution to the problem.

lol sunscreen gave people cancer for decades, did they fix that yet? lol

It’s kind of wild that we have this invisible lotion that literally blocks the sun from damaging our skin and most people barely think twice about it.

Honestly completely agree, we underestimate how incredible SPF really is. It literally lets you enjoy the sun while reducing serious risks like skin cancer and premature aging. Invisible armor basically.

There is clothing that is designed to block sunrays.

    It’s called UPF

We’ve been in the sun for hundreds of thousands of years and now all of the sudden we need sunscreen to survive? Get bent corpo.

Not really a novel idea though. We see a primitive version in the animal kingdom with just plain mud, we definitely also have pre medicine versions with ground up plants etc. I don’t think it’s as significant as you think either. It’s only needed because we live sedentary lifestyles now. 150 years ago no one needed sun block because anyone who worked out in the sun already had a year round protection from a tan and the vast majority of people didn’t leave where they grew up.

Meanwhile I spend at best 1hr in the sun a day and that’s across several different 5-10 minute stretches where I go from my office to my transport and transport to my home.

morning brain keeps reading it as “sun scream”.
Idk about the greatest invention… but its pretty good.

Hats with brims or just clothing in general and knowledge that the sun can cause cancer are far more important than the invention of sunscreen. Mud is a sun blocker, that sunscreen goes on clear is just vanity and if ancients knew the sun caused cancer wearing mud or a not-clear substance as sun protection might be normal today.

Language is unquestionably a better invention.  Besides being infinitely more useful than sunscreen, there’s no possibility that sunscreen could have been invented without it.

This is such a weird take. Out of all human inventions and ingenuity, this is the thing that impresses you most?

Except if it’s last the expiration date then it’s worse than not wearing any sunscreen at all iirc

Is this an unpopular opinion? Also that lotion is almost always made of metal: zinc or titanium oxide, its pretty cool shit.
