Quit my job on the spot

r/

Yup, I woke up this morning unemployed. I work from home, and have been for over 2 years. Yesterday my supervisor called me to tell me the president of our company is mandating all work from home employees go into the office at least twice a week. Wouldn’t be a problem except for the fact the reason I work from home is because I have to care full time for my disabled husband. He suffered a massive stroke 2 years ago, left him paralyzed on his right side and unable to speak. He is doing as well as he can, speech continues to improve every day, I’m so happy about that. He can’t walk, can’t go to the bathroom by himself, can’t care for himself at all. I emailed the prez asking why he was making this decision, did he think my performance suffered by working from home. He replied that it wasn’t me, I’m certainly a good employee but the company is “changing directions” to be more successful, which he said means he needs more bodies in the office and that he understands if I want to resign. Told me to let my supervisor know if I intend to work up to the implementation date. So I emailed my last time sheet, told him to have someone come pick up my computer because I’ll never step foot in that office again. I also told him his callousness in regard to my situation disappointed me to a level I didn’t know existed up until that point. I was pretty proud of that. I didn’t want to quit, I wanted him to officially fire me but I couldn’t stomach working one more second for that prick. So I can’t get unemployment but we’ll be ok for a bit, I’m a pretty good penny pincher. I just don’t know if I have it in me to pursue anything further, I’m thinking for my own mental health I should just drop it and move on.

Well, that blows. But, I just stepped in to say that you should check with your state about UI. You can sometimes collect if you quit for a good reason, and a drastic change to your working conditions is one of the main good reasons.

You didn’t just quit you drew a line where your dignity begins, and that’s not weakness, that’s power. But don’t let their cruelty cost you more than it has to talk to a lawyer, because walking away doesn’t mean you have to walk away empty-handed.

I am certain you will find a new and fitting job.
Where I am from you can get money to take care of someone fulltime from the health insurance and government.
Since you have been doing the care for a long time already i am sure you have looked in to it but if not getting in contact with a social worker is never a bad option to begin.

There are programs that pay you to take care of your loved ones and family members. They pay fairly well. I would look into it🌺
