My manager steals my work and tried to blackball me during a promotion

r/

I work in IT and my boss isn’t technical at all. He micromanages me, demands constant reporting and steals my ideas. That’s usually fine, but when things don’t work out he throws me under the bus.

I recently applied to another department (better pay, more interesting work) and found out he tried to blackball me by badmouthing me to the hiring manager.

He’s been with the company a long time and for some reason well liked by the execs. I don’t think it’s smart to file an official complaint against him and come out publicly against him.

What can I do?

Apply to work at other companies

Direct conversation with the other manager to get away from this asshole or apply to another company is the most sensible way to resolve.

Failing that, poison pill your next project so that when he steals it you can come in to the rescue immediately. Bear in mind this career/revenge path may have a limited future though.

Start documenting everything. Save emails, log meetings, and keep records of your contributions. If you ever need to escalate, you’ll need receipts
