TIFU by being mean at the gym

r/

walked up to a seemingly un-manned hack squat. it had a 45 and 5 lb on one side and 45 and 10 lb on the other side. So I figured last person didn’t re-rack. Put on 3×45 each side and just as my butt hit the seat, buddy comes up and says he was still on the machine. points out his phone which i genuinely did not notice. I said oh darn, whelp since i racked the wait, I’ll just quickly rep out a set. I did 8 reps. prob 20 seconds

He said, “just so you know that’s not cool”

just did the one set and then re-racked his odd stack weights back for him while he sulked.

Upon leaving I said “Hey man it’s easier to be cool about things”

yeah kinda cringe but also, it was a sincere mistake, but why waste a set? Just to be clear I would not have been on the equipment if I knew someone else was on it.

I spent the day working out scenarios in my head if I could have had a better retort, or if I should have grovingly apologised or done a whole bunch of things different.

TL:DR I accidentally intruded on a machine and then heaped on some cringe

I’m more impressed you just start whipping out 315s without a warm up

You could have just said “hey do you mind if I do a quick set coz I already racked the weights? I’ll reset it for you after”. He probably would have been fine with it.

The issue is that you admitted fault (even unintentional) and then proceeded to double down. It’s weird asking him to be courteous at the end when you didn’t offer him a chance to be.

🤷‍♂️ if you’re being honest about what you said it’s not that rude.

Where was he that you had time to put 4 plates on and take a couple off before he saw you?

You made a mistake, owned it, stayed polite, and even re-racked, honestly, not that deep.
