i’m working a job where we have to sign out gear at the start of the shift and return it at the end. one of mine went missing even though i know i put it back. they’re saying i might have to pay for it out of my paycheck.
just wondering if that’s even legal. there’s no written policy they showed me about paying for lost stuff. feels weird that they can just decide to take it out of what i earn. anyone know how that usually works?

They cannot force you, but they can fire you if you don’t voluntarily comply.
Your best bet is to plead your case that you did return the equipment.
Wage deductions for loss of employer property are legal in Texas with the employee’s written permission. And the deductions cannot bring you below minimum wage for the pay period as per federal law.
You can refuse, but they can fire you. If they do, you’d likely qualify for unemployment.
How much money are we talking about here?
