Find something that requires standing all day, and try it barefoot. Find a job with sharp objects or other hazards that can fall or be stepped on, and try it barefoot. Find a rocky path, a pine forest, or any surface in the winter, and try walking it barefoot.
Pretty obviously, shoes are foot protection. They’re also underratedly important for foot support. Those are the only two reasons I’d spend extra for a pair of shoes (save for dress shoes).

From my perspective as a lifelong barefooter, shoes are not so great for me.
