Location: North Carolina. Im 17 and i’ve been applying to as much jobs that i can find that dont ask for my ssn, but i’ve had like zero luck getting hired. My mom says that i have an ssn but i dont have a card, and me and her dont have a good relationship and she is against me getting a job, so me asking always turns into an argument. I have tried applying for a card online but it asks me to submit some kind of Id and i dont know what to use because i dont have a school id card or anything like that. I dont even have my permit yet because she refuses to help me find my birth certificate even though ive looked and i also need my ssn to get my permit 😭Will i really have to wait until im 18 to apply for a birth certificate? I really have to have a job before school starts because its required for a class i signed up for and im so worried

Go in person to a Social Security office with any ID you have.
You can go in person or order by mail to get your birth certificate. Look online for terms. If you don’t have ID, they may require secondary documents like bills or school records. Then go get a state ID with the birth certificate and use that to get a ss card.
To get a birth certificate, you can ask for a new one to be issued from the clerk/records dept of the county you were born. Most of the time you can Google “replacement birth certificate X county” and it will give at least some instructions.
Visit the SSA website and check was forms of ID they will accept – this might require multiple things like school records, utility bills, proof of residence, birth certificate if you have it by then, something. Then take that in person to the closest SSA.
You could also frame it differently – you could try asking to be able to enroll in school (trade school if she would support that more than college).
NAL you’re not going to get a job that’s legal without having these documents. You’re going to need a photo ID and proof of residency to work aka a birth certificate or social. Assuming you were born in a hospital and that your parents did everything correctly you have a birth certificate and social security number assigned at birth. It’s the government’s way to confirm your existence and make sure it’s you. Being a minor you can still request this information but you’re going to hit a roadblock without some proof of who you are. In order to get a state id, temp driving permit/license, or a passport your social security card and birth certificate are required. Seems like your mother is purposely keeping it away from you to keep you in a bind.
Do you have a youth at risk center near you? They may have an advocate who can help you obtain personal documents and get a state ID.
Getting identity documents is going to be very hard as a minor without parental assistance. Try asking your guidance counselor or someone in school administration for your SSN–they probably have it in their records. You can also tell your mom you need to fill out a FAFSA form for college, which will require your SSN.
You should also talk to whoever is running the class, explain the situation, and ask if you could satisfy the requirement another way, e.g., by volunteering somewhere.
Call CPS and tell them you’re being financially abused and she refuses to give you your documents.
Might also call the police and tell them a family member has your vital documents and refuses to give them to you, ask who can help, if they can send an officer to talk to her or help you contact a social worker.
If you are male, don’t forget to register for Selective Service when you turn 18. You’ll need the SSN for that.
Just a friendly heads up.
Are you sure you aren’t an abducted child? I’m not trying to be flippant. This whole scenario seems way off. You don’t have a birth certificate or a SS card and your mother is obstructing your efforts to earn wages. Nothing about any of this is normal. It gives serious “hiding something big” vibes. Edit: Not a lawyer, just scrolled upon this.
(Mother) “refuses to help me find my birth certificate” + “My mom says that i have an ssn but i don’t have a card” Are you completely certain you are her child? Sounds a lot like something someone who has abducted a child would do.
