Lettuce is genuinely one of the worst vegetables of all time

r/

I cannot even fathom how ANYONE can even tolerate that green lump of doom in any delicacy or recipe. It tastes like shit, it has very low versatility. It has a very strong flavor so if you add a bit too much lettuce to your sandwich, it will only taste like fucking lettuce. You do realize that you can make salad out of other shit right? A bunch of veggies are low calorie, and they ACTUALLY TASTE GOOD, yet I’ve never seen a mushroom based salad on a menu. There’s also no reason to use lettuce when the almighty cabbage exists, cabbage actually tastes good and can be put in a bunch of recipes. It can also be used for science experiments. A food you can actually have fun with instead of experiencing a bunch of dread from the lump of lamenting lachrymose. I also hate that when people say that tomato tastes like ass when lettuce is right there, LIKE YOU CAN EAT SOMEONES ASS BUT GOD FORBID EVEN A SHRED OF TOMATO IS ON YOUR BURGER. also another thing to note. Alot of the lettuce is unusable due to the shitty hard crunchy white park which tastes like doom despair and everything unfair, but chuck that in into my everyday foods. On a final note, why does lettuce look so good but tastes so ass? Like if you’ve never tasted lettuce before but looked at a lettuce, it would look heavenly, but it’s HELLISH. That’s all I have to say

Did you literally just say that lettuce has low versatility?

  3. bretshitmanshart Avatar

Doing the thing were you pretend to have a strong opinion on a non issue doesn’t make you interesting

  4. for-a-dreamer Avatar

Strong flavour? If anything, lettuce is there mostly for texture. You need that fresh crunch in a sandwich or a burger. I also can’t fathom how someone thinks cabbage tastes better.

Also, maybe this might be an unpopular opinion in of itself, but the “hard crunchy white part” is the best part of lettuce imo. I hate when I get a salad and it’s just the bitter leafy bits, I want some cronch

  5. Exhausted_920 Avatar

I must admit, I had a good laugh. To say how awful the white part of lettuce is, then say how you’d rather use cabbage was gold. All hail edgelord of the cruciferous vegetables.🤣🤣

  6. chrisXlr8r Avatar

Mushroom based salad ? As someone who strongly dislikes mushrooms, that sounds horrid

  7. Only_Watch4282 Avatar

Lettuce should either be salad or decoration, or wrapping Korean bbq meats, wholeheartedly agree that it’s not as versatile, nutritious or delicious as cabbage can be

  8. f182 Avatar

Have my upvote, lettuce is dreadful. I happily eat most salads but I cannot fathom the point of lettuce. Maybe it’s been around the god awful ploughman’s lunch that’s turned me off it.

    Caesar salad. Enough said.

  15. datewiththerain Avatar

There are so many lettuces. If you’re referring to iceberg, it’s relatively cheap so I think people add it to have a vegetable. Also lettuce doesn’t require cooking. Cabbage is trickier and imo better tasting when cooked.

I think you, like me, are just one of those people who has some sort of weird palate which means that lettuce tastes bitter and horrible to us. I’ve spent my whole life trying to explain it to people who just say “how can you not like it, it doesn’t taste of anything?”

  18. cmstyles2006 Avatar

    …lettuce has a strong flavor?

  19. Calackyo Avatar

Lettuce is probably the most inoffensive flavour I’ve ever come across. I don’t even like it and it’s still not worth removing from something I eat, because while it might not add much, it’s presence takes nothing away either.

  28. ShotCombination5720 Avatar

I fully agree, I never got the appeal of lettuce. It’s the worst green there is. Spinach, spring onion, wild garlic, nettle, etc, are all better.

  29. Sea_Philosophy6506 Avatar

  32. Jsenss Avatar

I feel like your description of lettuce assumes iceberg lettuce is the only kind that exists. There’s so many varieties and looks and flavors. Cabbage is too bitter to be used in a lot of things. Mushrooms aren’t even a vegetable.

  33. SuitableScar903 Avatar

  37. GreenZebra23 Avatar

For years I thought I hated lettuce. Turns out I just hated iceberg lettuce. I grew up very Midwestern in the 80s and it was the only kind I encountered until I was an adult. I like every other kind I’ve tried. Romaine, butter lettuce, green leaf, all great to me and higher in nutrients than iceberg lettuce which is basically crunchy weird tasting water. I’ll eat iceberg now but I’m still not crazy about it.

  38. B1lly28 Avatar

If lettuce has a strong flavour its gone bad

  39. Urbanttrekker Avatar

This is definitely unpopular but I agree. I hate lettuce especially on burgers and sandwiches. It’s just filler. And people who say “oh, I need crunch”, ew. I hate crunchy sandwiches.

Now, if you have some arugula or real green leafy lettuce, you can argue. But iceberg? That stuff is nasty. Especially the shredded gross stuff they try to fill a sandwich with. Most of its white and flavorless at best or brown and wilted nasty at worst. It’s cheap filler for sandwich shops, may as well just shred some cardboard on there.

  40. SubjectiveTea192 Avatar

Its kind of hypocritical to judge people for not liking tomatoes when you dont like the most basic ingredient on a burger. Whats next you dont like plain rice because it has no flavour? No shit.

  41. scp999sfather Avatar

  47. AnotherCat2000 Avatar

Saying lettuce has strong flavour and that’s all you can taste is indeed unpopular opinion. Not sure that even qualifies as opinion as it’s just untrue. Or at least I have never heard of anyone saying the same (in contrast to corn or spinach for instance). Unless of course you have some weird preceptors, which maybe is possible? In the end people do eat weird staff.

I LOVE how heated these comments are. Super downvoted comments saying relatively benign things. I don’t even necessarily disagree. I just feel like I’m party to some hot topic I was never aware of or invited to hahaha

  49. cthulhus_spawn Avatar

Iceberg lettuce is horrible. It stinks. It has no nutritional value. If you feed just iceberg lettuce to a vegetarian animal it will die of starvation. It is crunchy smelly water. I refuse to eat it. It is not food.

    You are 100% correct.

  50. Socratic_Phoenix Avatar

I disagree with you in general but I will say, whenever I order a seaweed salad and it ends up being a tiny pile of seaweed on a huge pile of lettuce, it does piss me off. Like, seaweed is supposed to be the base of the salad, not lettuce.

  51. Major_Enthusiasm1099 Avatar

Fine as a topping but never should be eaten alone. Not enough nutritional value

  52. RudeOwl1816 Avatar

A very strong and overpowering flavor?? What lol? The main thing some people hate about lettuce is the fact that it doesn’t have much flavor. It’s mostly added for a crunchy texture

Bro really said Lettuce, a vegetable known for high versatility and low flavour with a high water percentage, is actually not versatile, has too much flavour and CABBAGE is better.

Just go eat some Kimchi and get your headchecked, upvoted for an actual stupid opinion.

  70. Non-American_Idiot Avatar

Lettuce has a strong taste? Come on.

The cabbage being better than lettuce thing is also shocking. Cabbage tastes like someone strained the water in my toilet before I could flush. Lettuce tastes like water and is mainly used for texture.

  71. wokehouseplant Avatar

I agree with you as far as this all pertains to iceberg lettuce.

I don’t understand the people trying to say that iceberg lettuce has no flavor. WTF are you all talking about! It has this strong, bitter flavor. Shredded iceberg is like eating actual grass clippings. It’s disgusting and ruins everything it’s on.

I wonder if this is like the cilantro thing, where some folks can taste it and others cannot.

I do like other lettuce types though.

  72. Cautious_Chain1297 Avatar

I dislike most vegetables and lettuce is one of the few I can handle precisely because it has a fairly weak flavor and can be easily disguised in a sandwich or with a simple seasoning on a salad. If you think it has a strong flavor, I don’t know what vegetables you can actually eat

  73. ronshasta Avatar

One of the most versatile vegetables around? Sounds like you don’t put any effort into cooking it or using it in dishes, also cabbage is literally the same thing but blander

  74. PkmnMstr10 Avatar

Well why don’t you just lettuce upvote that unpopular opinion right there?

  75. YBRmuggsLP21 Avatar

Add too much lettuce to your sandwich and it will only taste like lettuce.

Yeah, that applies to, well, basically everything.

  76. VibrantSunsets Avatar

Um excuse you, I certainly will not eat ass OR tomato.

Youve got a weird sensitivity to lettuce. Adding lettuce to a turkey sandwich is delicious, but I most certainly can still taste all the other parts of my turkey sandwich. Same with a burger.

A mushroom or cabbage salad sound terrible.

  77. LocoCoyote Avatar

    I like lettuce

  78. iHateReddit_srsly Avatar

The worst part is that it’s not even that healthy. You’re not gaining any valuable nutrients by eating it. It has very little fiber or anything else. There is no reason to be eating that wet cardboard of a vegetable

  79. SoGoodAtAllTheThings Avatar

What kind of lettuce are you eating? Is it rubbed in dirt?

  80. taleoftooshitty Avatar

any chance that you were eating homegrown lettuce that was harvested late? Even romaine can be very bitter if that is the case. Otherwise, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

  81. Apprehensive_Ruin692 Avatar

No it’s Bok Choy then celery then lettuce

  82. LurkerKing13 Avatar

Lettuce is a very broad category of vegetables but standard iceberg lettuce tastes like literally nothing.

  83. Chrispeefeart Avatar

Lettuce with a strong flavor? What kind of lettuce are you eating? Or maybe you just have some really interesting taste buds. Lettuce is practically crunchy water in terms of flavor so generally can add filling and texture with very little impact on flavor.

  84. Chadly80 Avatar

Generally speaking when it’s in good condition it adds little benefit but when it’s added by someone expecting you to pay them personally it’s usually wilted and nasty, so I agree.

  85. SeaCranberry6144 Avatar

How does it make you feel a meal Ive had on several occasions was

Lettuce salad mix straight from the bag, eaten in handfuls while waiting for my main course which was a chicken breast straight from frozen into the toaster oven until it was like safe to eat with BBQ sauce.

  86. Ellen-CherryCharles Avatar

    OP just can’t cook

  87. HebiSnakeHebi Avatar

There are many different varieties and qualities of lettuce. Red romaine is drastically different to iceberg lettuce. Homegrown is different from what you find in the supermarket.

I would argue lettuce is extremely versatile, especially if you have several different types available.

Still, it may not be something you enjoy. Lettuces are usually somewhat subtle in their flavors compared to other vegetables.

  88. Specific-Parsnip9001 Avatar

    >A bunch of veggies are low calorie, and they ACTUALLY TASTE GOOD, yet I’ve never seen a mushroom based salad on a menu

You’re eating salad to taste the vegetables, I’m eating it to taste the italian dressing. We are not the same.

Agree. I only like lettuce in Salads, keep it off my burgers and sandwiches. And in all salads except Caesar salad, spinach is generally a better choice.

  95. disdkatster Avatar

What kind of lettuce? Most lettuce has very little flavor to it so unless it is endive or another bitter type I am surprised by this take. My salads are about half and half. Half romaine and half fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts.

  96. car55tar5 Avatar

I fucking love lettuce so much, I can’t wrap my head around someone not liking it.

  97. GGuts Avatar

Absolutely agree. And every place always has iceberg salad instead of something proper like arugula. But iceberg salad is pretty much the worst in terms of taste and nutrient profile.

Edit: I should have read more carefully. You think that lettuce has a strong taste? What!?
