I’m doing fine in my current role, but I have zero desire to climb the ladder or go into management. Everyone around me talks about “what’s next,” and I honestly just want to stay where I’m at. Is that lazy?
Is it okay to not want to “move up” at work?

It’s absolutely fine We all move at different paces through life . Some people want to progress some people are happy where they are and that is completely normal
Live for yourself.
It’s totally fine. Different people value different things. I am like you l, I value being comfortable, I like being good at my job and seasoned. I don’t need to move up. I am comfortable with the pay I receive for the job I do. I don’t want to be the boss. That sounds like more work without the fun parts of my job that I enjoy. Maybe I am a little lazy but I am content. I work hard and am good at what I do but I don’t desire to add more to my plate. 🤷🏼♀️
It’s understandable. I am often tempted to just be a worker again, but I also hate having to deal with people’s half baked plans so prefer to be in a lead role
The privileges/freedoms are good for me too
Absolutely fine, You do you. Some times it’s even wiser not to. Every manager I worked for said it wasn’t worth it. More pressure, more hours, no overtime. I make more than my supervisors and managers, and have a more secure job. They all shitting bricks about AI now.
yes its fine you dont need to be career focused money isnt everything
If you’ve got a job you like, pays the bills and seems secure then feel free to stay there
It should be fine, honestly, but I worry it would be looked askance at by management l, like you aren’t committed to the company.
I’ve avoided offers to move up for many years… As long as you are satisfied with current position and pay, stay where you want to be
For me, I have a technical position that focuses on equipment… I’ve done middle management in past and would much rather deal with equipment problems than people problems… You can hit equipment with a hammer.
It’s not lazy, it’s being content.
From a management perspective, it’s actually nice to have stability from someone who’s happy doing what they’re doing. It’s unfortunate that many companies don’t incentivize those employees very well
Nope. They’ve tried to get me into higher positions or on committees and shit and I deny it. The pay increase would almost be a downgrade after taxes. The responsibility would be more stressful and tbh I run my own 2 businesses out of work.
I always say 9-5 is knock around time (though I am very productive) and I’ll make my real money on my time.
it depends where you work. in larger corporations, you can become more of a lay-off target if it’s seen that a person has not been promoted for a long time in a role where promotion is expected. i was specifically targeted for lay-off for this reason. but i’d rather be laid off than become a manager
Had this exact same chat with my boss recently about future goals. I have clearly expressed I don’t want to go up the career ladder- don’t need the extra stress. I value work life balance more.
The only thing that matters is what you want and are you happy and satisfied.
Mo’ money mo’ prolems.
