Hello,
I completed a legal name change fifteen years. I never thought I needed to amend my birth certificate until recently, when I attempted to get a real ID. However, that was rejected due to a problem with my name change
The problem is that my birth name had multiple middle names, but I did not include them all in the legal name change. Using fake names, if my birth name is “Alan Bob Charlie Douglas”, on the legal name change document I listed as my birth name “Alan Bob Douglas”.
Why I did this I can’t say – i was twenty, and my birth names were VERY long, so I assume I didn’t know how to fit it in the small space.
Either way, the legal name change was fine outside of this, but now I’m unsure how to fix it. My employer offers a legal advice service, but they were not sure of the fix, they gave me a number for a local lawyer but the cost to have a conversation with him was high and to be very frank I’m broke.
My understanding is that I should be able to amend my legal name change using a similar process to how I applied for the legal name change in the first place, submitting some paperwork to the court and paying a few for that/having a court date, does this sound correct? Is there another process? Or is this complex enough that I need to fork over the real dollars for a lawyer?
