Do men get more BO as we age? If yes, how do you combat it in a health way. I’m 35

r/

I find myself being aware of my own odor and this wasnt a thing before, unless I was really active or didnt wear deodorant. This wasn’t something that happened before and I use the same deodorant for like the past 10 years. This is kinda freaking me out. My diet got a bit worse over the past yearish, but still better than the crap I consumed in my 20’s. Nobody else has complained or said anything, but I imagine they’re being polite. If this is just an aging thing somehow I’ll just use more deodorant, but I can’t say I’m a fan of smelling myself

Get checked for diabetes my guy.

I’m 3 years into being 40, and I don’t remember the last time I smelled. I don’t wear deodorant at all anymore. So I’m getting less smelly with age for some reason.

Do you shower daily and wash thoroughly?

    Are you overweight?

Do you eat a lot of fried foods and drink alcohol?

These can all play a role.

I was on a cruise and sitting in the couch I put my arms up and the smell ABSOLUTELY devastated me. I was super active not in terrible shape and had been running around all day in the heat. But turns out the deodorant changed its formula. So I just had to change that up and was right as rain. Body hair traps odor too so that’s also something.

Just a heads up – when was the last time you used a cleaning tab in your washing machine? If you haven’t, run a cleaning cycle or two back to back with the washer tabs.

Whenever I know I am smelling and can’t take a shower, especially if I am out in public, hand sanitizer is a good go to. People have stated don’t use it all the time or too often and check it on your skin before using it.

So far I have no issues, and I got to the gym and play sports, if I use hand sanitizer I stay BO free for like 48 hra

Good thing is as you age your sense of smell also weakens. So, we have that going for us 🤣

If you’ve been using the same deodorant for a long time, I’ve heard that your “armpit biome” can become accustomed to the active antibacterial ingredient in what you use, which makes it more resistant. You might want to switch to a different kind. Me personally, I also occasionally use a stronger cleaner on my armpits (salicylic acid is a good one) to make sure everything in there is dead.

Diet can be a big factor too.

Make sure your shirts aren’t stained from deodorant. I’ve used baking powder (or soda, I forget which one) to clean it out of my shirts.

I noticed certain deodorants no longer worked for me. It’s also a good idea to get a health checkup when you notice new smells from body odor, could be many things.

I’ve never seen anything one way or the other, the only thing is I saw somewhere that when we have children we emit more pheromones or something but I’ve no idea if that’s actually true

bO is effected by, among other things, diet, amount of physical exercise, hormone levels due to age and the aforementioned, and environmental factors. Investigate if any of those are linked.

i found out how to fix this a couple months ago.

Get Antibacterial soap and use it on your armpits twice a week and when you’re done showering and dry up use an antiperspirant deodorant . if you can’t use an antibacterial soap you can also just use alcohol wipes on your armpits to kill the bacteria that makes you smell funky. easy !!

The material of your clothing can be an issue. Avoid nylon, polyester and other unnatural fibres. Cotton and linen are better.

Looks like a lot of good intel in the comments. Hydrating your face off will help reduce odor as well.

I dealt with this, still do. Started noticing it while I was still active duty in the Marine Corps. I was not out of shape and I would shower daily or twice daily. I tried different brands of over the counter deodorant.
Eventually I moved to an anti-bacterial bar of soap and wash cloth in the shower. That really knocks the smell down.
I also use a goats milk based deodorant now. That works super well for me. I’ve heard good things about the native brand as well.

This will likely be a trial and error for you just like it was for me, but try that anti-bacterial soap and washcloth in the shower.

For context: I’m still an active person. I work construction and still use the method listed above. Hope you find some help from this OP.

    Alum crystal deodorant.

It’s a crystal (like salt crystal) you wet and rub on skin. It’s odorless itself and does not reduce sweating (so antiperspirant may be used alongside) but what it does is changes the Ph of the skin to where it kills the bacteria that feed on sweat and produce the BO.

It’s cheap as fuck, lasts like a year, and works like damn magic.

Are you on any new medication? I started finasteride around your age and it completely changed my body odor.

over 40 and WFH. I don’t smell during the normal day, I don’t wear deodorant. I can go outside, sweat, and not be THAT noticeable. The problem is when I sweat, dry, then sweat again, holy crap it’s terrible. I’ve learned to bring an extra shirt. Especially for theme parks.

Soap and water and try to get fit

My parents had a musty smell to em and I bought them some tea tree soap.  After a few months the musty smell went away.   Also, do you use antiperspirant?

You just continue to be a man we are not allowed to have feelings or be weak cause women will attack us if we are

If it’s your armpits, shave them. If that’s not your thing at least trim them very short and keep them that way. If it’s also in your clothing I can recommend soaking in a water vinegar solution overnight before washing them

  25. colojason Avatar

As I’ve gotten older I’ve found that any given deodorant only works on me for at most 3 months. Then I have to switch to a different one.

I can switch back to the original after that and it will work again.

  26. Lost-Tip-6756 Avatar

Also it depends on your diet. I just noticed this year that when I eat garlic, I get really bad BO later.

  27. Grand_Raccoon0923 Avatar

    Old man stink is real.

  28. awoodby Avatar

BO is anaerobic bacteria growing in your sweat glands. Clean and dry prevents it, the moisture makes it grow. I hope you actually use antiperspirant, which tries to keep you dry, not just deoderant that just adds an air freshener on top of whatever scent you’re making.

Aside from that, yah with weight or maybe age, reduced activity you can certainly sweat more than you used to which could cause more body odor.

If you’re not meaning armpits etc, just your body odor in general changing, that could happen with age, various conditions such as diabetes or liver issues and other medical issues.

  29. SnooSuggestions9830 Avatar

Get Hibiclens and use it in the shower as shower gel like once a week on the smelly areas.

It basically kills everything odour causing.

Use regular shower gel or whatever you use in-between.

  30. LeftieLeftorium Avatar

Keep your pots trim, good hygiene and antiperspirant for the really hot days.

  31. Ubockinme Avatar

If you wait until you’re 50, you probably won’t be able to smell, and won’t give a damn anyway.

  32. stevejobs4525 Avatar

Shaving your armpits helps a lot

  33. avi550m Avatar

Rub alum block on your armpits after a shower

  34. gecko2704 Avatar

You should shower at least once or twice daily. Maybe more in the summer

  35. op3l Avatar

Nope. I still am about same as when I’m in my 20s.

I do fart more at night but that’s more with diet than anything.

  36. jazzjoking Avatar

I bcome less smelly now on my 30 compare to how I was in my 17-22,

  37. cynic09 Avatar

No, more or less stayed the same for me.
