HOA kicking us out for repairs

r/

Location: Illinois

My wife and I own our condo, it’s 2 bedrooms 1 bathroom. The HOA recently had plumbers out doing routine maintenance and they found a collapsed community pipe under our bathroom. They said we have to be out of the condo for 3 days while they do the repairs, but the problem is that we have 3 cats that have to leave with us while they repair it. The problem we are having is that they only offered $200 a night to find a place to stay with our cats and there is simply no place in the Chicago area under $200 that accepts 3 cats. I’m just curious if we have any say in any of this or if we have to do what they want and pay a bit out of pocket. Thank you!

It’s likely you’ll need a pay a bit out of pocket but check your HOA’s CC&Rs and bylaws to see what they say about relocation during required maintenance, if anything. You may be able to negotiate with them, but I do not believe they would be required to pay for this unless your animals are service animals with legal protections.

Your home owners insurance may cover this but it’s questionable whether it’s worth to make a claim.
