Location: Ohio. This may end up long, even though im trying to keep it concise.
I moved out of an apartment at the end of May and just received a deduction list of them holding my $1100 deposit.
While we were there, two separate apartments reported seeing roaches. When we first saw them we also reported them to the landlord. That landlord didn’t set up a consistent extermination schedule, even though we would tell them every time we would see bugs. Halfway through our lease another company bought out our complex. They came to talk to us about the infestation, we told them we didn’t think the previous landlord was doing enough and they said they would be on it. They weren’t. When we left we put pretty much all our belongings into a garage here because these landlords offered to continue with extermination since they were still doing it anyways.
Today (41 days after I moved out) this landlord sent an email charging $800 for extermination costs and charged an extra month of rent ($1100) due to “severe roach infestation prevented repair and rental”.
They had been doing some very intense renovations of the other apartments in my building, to the point that my unit was the only one left with anyone in it at the time we moved out. They took over these apartments six months ago.
I want to know if they can charge me for their inability to rent out this apartment since I moved out. I also would like to know if they can charge so much for an extermination that started elsewhere in this apartment, when I had been trying to get two separate landlords to combat this issue for months.
Thank you
