Interested in pursuing law enforcement!

r/

I’m very, very interested in law enforcement. My current degree that I’ve been working towards didn’t really work out, but I’ve been interested in law enforcement for a while and have been researching how to get into it.

I want to get into policing, and I am changing schools to get an associates degree. I see that many people recommend getting a degree for something completely unrelated so you can have it as a backup. However, if policing works out, I was thinking that I might want to pursue being a 911 dispatcher.

This all led me to the idea of getting an associates in Emergency Management/Public Safety, as it would assist me in both of those fields, and it has other options for careers. What are all of your thoughts on this?

Feel free to ask me anything if you have any questions!

The degree won’t really benefit you unless you want to get into management.

Most agencies dispatchers and cops are entirely separate career paths. One is non-sworn the other is a sworn position.

Though some agencies let you get cross trained in dispatch as a cop. Which is a great way to make big OT $$.

I would get a degree that will be useful if you don’t end up being a cop or a dispatcher. Emergency Management/Public Safety won’t be all that useful even in the law enforcement or communications realm, much less outside of them. What’s your plan C? Plan D?

Not trying to piss on your parade at all, just giving you the same advice I give to my sons.
