I’m 18 and have come home from uni for the year until October and need productive ways to kill time. I feel really lazy as I don’t have a job, but no one will hire someone who’s only around three months max so I have no means of making money. I’m thinking of volunteering in a charity shop but think my mum will be mad because I’m not getting any money from it.
What do I do for the three ish months before I go back to university ? I want to be productive but can’t find anywhere that hires for that short of a duration.

Wasting these three months would be a tragedy because this is your golden window to outgrow who you were last term. Volunteer build skills create something because money isn’t the only currency that pays off long term.
Wasting three months is a crime against your future self use this time to level up, not lie down. Learn a high-impact skill, volunteer smart, or build a side hustle; money will come later but momentum starts now.
Whilst I agree with the sentiment of previous comments that you should look for something to fill your time (volunteering is a great idea!), please also make sure to spend time doing things you like. This is your opportunity to recharge before you go back to university, so getting enough rest and recuperation is just as important as building a strong CV.
I would suggest to plan outings with friends if you can, e.g. camping if you have the means, but even things as simple as going for walks. If you can’t get a job, fill your time doing things that make you feel fulfilled. This is a great opportunity to start a new hobby or learn a new craft.
Not everything in life should be geared towards making money. You’re incredibly young, the rest of your adult life will be spent working in some capacity. Try to take at least some of your summer for yourself, because once you leave university you probably will never have three months’ extended holiday again. Contrary to popular belief, engaging in your hobbies and spending time with friends is not a waste.
