Employer denying reimbursement

Was hired at a company around 2 years ago. Salaried, full time, part of the agreed salary when I accepted the offer covered a personal vehicle reimbursement amounting $700 monthly.

Recently I noticed my paycheck was $700 short and when I asked my manager about it, I was told that we now needed to submit mileage/gas reimbursement requests to accounting and they would be paid out separately. Ok, can do!

Cue getting the runaround for the requested reimbursement. (My first one, it was for approx $400) A few more weeks passed and I then left the company on good terms for a position elsewhere. Final paycheck still did not include the reimbursement. I’ve been following up with accounting at my manager’s advice with no success until today, when I received a reply of:

“Unfortunately we are not able to afford to pay out the mileage request. I apologize and thank you for understanding.”

Where should I go from here; just write it off as lost or keep pursuing it..?

Write a demand letter and imply legal action is a potential way you are willing to solve it with and move on. I don’t know if $400 is worth even going to small claims court over, but you could.
