Today I had an appointment for a quote for some new windows. Both I and my boyfriend happened to be working from home. He lives with me, but I own the home myself. I was the primary one interfacing with the window guy: I made the appointment, I showed him what needed to be done, I looked at the samples, I signed the paperwork, I paid the deposit. During the hour or so we were talking, my boyfriend popped in here and there to make conversation, but for the most part was not involved. Eventually the salesperson gathers up his stuff to leave and shakes my boyfriend’s hand, then turns for the door while my outstretched hand just sits there… he does a double take when he eventually sees it and rushes back to shake it.
What the hell?? What’s a home-improving lady gotta do to get some respect around here?

In this scenario, I would honestly go with a different company. That salesman gets a commission and he no longer deserves it.
May be an honest mistake. It takes some humility to come back correct his mistake. Unless there was a lot going on before of course.
At a furniture store, the Sales Guy helped me and my boyfriend look at recliners and I’m the obvious purchaser. While we’re doing the financing, I’m asking the questions but SG keeps directing his answers to my BF. We finish the purchase and I’m howling in the car because it was so obvious and dumb. I just rolled with it in the moment, but returned the next day, talked with a SG#2, voided the first sale and made a better deal with SG#2 because little did SG know, I wanted a mattress too.
In some states you have to right to cancel a contract within a certain number of days. For example, in Maryland you have 5 days to cancel with any home improvement contractor.
Just in case you were thinking about it.
Went to buy a car, I had looked at some models and had a notebook with a list of 5-6 questions total. Very visible. Fuel economy, maintenance schedule etc.
First question I get asked was , where my husband was.
No man with me. No wedding ring. I wasn’t married.
Looked him dead in the eye, and said “Shoot, let me go find him”
And I got in my 8 year old car with no air conditioning, and a bad rear axle and left.
I do sales support for home maintenance services. We only have 5 women who are sales reps. I can’t even tell you how amazingly different, and better everything goes when it’s just women.
