Advice for a freshman?

r/

I’m about to start high-school soon and I would like to have some advice on how to focus on things like projects or how to work on procrastination since I have a very bad procrastination habit. If you have any other type of advice I would love to hear (or read) it. I want all the advice you can give me!

Create a to-do list for a week o month, then journal your day. In this way you can track your activities and have a goal within the day.

It was very effective to me when I was in my high-school

Start small, stay organized, avoid drama, and don’t beat yourself up you’ve got this.

Hi friend, do you like video games? I like to “gameify” tasks to make them more fun and avoid procrastinating. Think of it like increasing a skill or completing a quest, and break down those big tasks into smaller ones.

Example: History report due on Friday -> quest 1 find a topic quest 2 write an outline quest 3 write the main paragraph. Then when you’re done, reward yourself with something you like! Good luck and have fun 🙂

Fun! I hope you’re excited! Ok school work stuff first:

I often struggled with ‘starting’ projects or homework more than anything, so if I had a few minutes before the class ended I’d try to start it right away and write the due date at the top. That way whenever I came back to it I could just pick up where I left off & see when it was due and how many days of procrastinating I had left before it bit me!

Figure out a system of taking notes that works for you, because it will help you stay awake in the really boring classes & there’s a good chance it will come in handy for years.

Other things I wish I figured out sooner:

Don’t feel pressured to stay with your friends from your past grade/school. It’s normal to grow apart from some and trying to force people to stick together can be more work and drama than it’s worth sometimes.

If you ever do something embarrassing – making a joke or laughing it off usually makes people forget about it faster than trying to hide it.

Don’t leave valuables easily accessible in your bag unattended evvveeerrr. Friends had money stolen from pockets, I literally had airpods stolen in the 3 seconds it took to turn in a test and the school will not care.

Try your best not to send or post photos or messages you can’t take back. Live your life and have fun, but never forget even the people you think you’ll always be close with can turn on you when you least expect it.

Don’t be afraid to stand up for people even if you’re not friends, and even if it’s against teachers – just stay respectful. Adults are not always right and power can go to their heads sometimes, walk out if you need to.

And lastly – advice I got from a complete stranger in college that I still use to this day when I am crashing out over a mistake – breathe. It feels like the end of the world right now, but in a year, you’ll barely even remember it.

All that out of the way, have some fun! You got this!
