i know this sounds sort of stupid, but it’s getting to me a little bit.
my boyfriend (i’ll call him J) has a cat named buck. i love buck, i think he’s adorable, and i have no issue with him. however, J has a habit of sharing food with him. it’s not the sharing in itself that i find disgusting, i share food with my dog all the time, it’s the fact that J will let buck eat out of his bowl, off his plate, or off his spoon/fork, and then will continue using the bowl/plate/spoon/fork.
i find that disgusting and unhygienic, to be honest, but i’ve never said anything because it’s his own food, J can decide what he does with it, although J does know that i think he’s a bit weird for it.
however, yesterday J and i were sharing a tub of ice-cream, like we usually do. buck was sniffing around it, and J went to go and give some to buck off of his spoon. i, rather sharply, said “if you let him lick that, it’s not going back in [the ice-cream tub]”. i probably should’ve worded it better, even though i really didn’t want to share a tub of ice-cream with a spoon that has been licked by a cat that i’ve seen eat flies before.
J didn’t say anything, but he did give me a look that clearly showed he was annoyed/judging me like i was the crazy one for thinking it’s unhygienic.
we haven’t talked about it since, but i can’t stop thinking that he’s mad at me. AITA?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> I snapped at my boyfriend for trying to share ice-cream with his cat because I think that it’s unhygienic, and he acted like he was annoyed at me.

ESH you guys need to talk about issues together, not snap and sit in silence
He’s going to give that cat diabeetus, or poison it. There are so many people foods that aren’t safe for cats
NTA. Letting an animal lick the bowl or giving them some outside of the bowl is one thing (one thing I wouldn’t personally do because pets don’t need ice cream) but to let him lick off the spoon and then put it back into the tub? Heck no.
Nta. That is incredibly unhygienic and unsavoury.
NTA, cats mouths are actually not as clean as people think, the thought that they are cleaner than human mouths is actually a myth. They contain plenty of bacteria that if ingested or they lick an open wound on one of you can cause serious infection. Secondly, he needs to do more research to be a responsible cat owner. Adult cats are actually lactose intolerant. Not only that but the sugar and fat content in ice cream can lead to health issues. It’s generally not recommended to share human food with cats due to various concerns with spices, salt, caloric content, sugar, fats, etc. Cat food is made to provide the necessary nutrients that cats truly need. I own 3 cats and don’t get me wrong they beg for food all the time, the only human food i ever give them is parmesan cheese (extremely low lactose content) or small pieces of cooked chicken breast with no seasonings, and even then it’s never more than a piece or two of either (they’ve still gotten sick over just that little amount too). There are also lots of foods and spices that are just straight up toxic for cats to eat and if eaten on a consistent basis can cause kidney damage which is already a massive issue for cats and one of the largest reasons cat die in older ages (kidneys tend to give out not the food, the food just exacerbates the issue). What I typically do is look up anything I want to give my kitties before I do so, so I can have a good idea of what harm could come of it, if any. If he really wants to share food with his kitty then it should be a literal single piece of low or no lactose shredded cheese or cook up very small pieces of chicken breast with NO seasoning on it at all. Cats are not made to consume the same things we do and get sick very easily. Please have him do his research on what possible issues and sickness he can cause his kitty to develop.
NTA I let my cat lick my plate/bowl clean sometimes or eat leftover food from my plate but it’s usually when i’m done with it and afterwards I put it in the dishwasher. Hell i even let my cat lick ME but wash off afterwards
I love that he loves the cat this much but it’s okay to be grossed out by this. This is a problem where a chit chat is the solution
NTA. Let him be mad, and gross
NTA. Others have already explained the arguments for how unhealthy it is for the cat to eat that stuff often. Just speaking on terms of hygiene, it’s whatever for him to do what he wants by himself, but going ahead to let a cat lick a spoon that’s going in a communal tub of ice cream is disgusting. Cat mouths are full of bacteria and just because he doesn’t seem to care about that doesn’t mean you need to agree.
