Long story short, I was severely abused as a child, DCS cases had been opened and closed because I was “just spoiled,” I ran away so many times, etc etc. Met my (now) family at church when I was 12 through bio dad [bio parents were not together, D was in and out of jail.] They’ve taken care of me since, but up until I was 18 it had to be in secret somewhat, because bio mom didn’t want anyone else to take care of me even though she didn’t. I packed my bags and left as soon as I turned 18. My story is way too long, but that’s as short of an explanation I can do.
I’m 23 now. I’ve wanted to be adopted for forever, but we didn’t know that we wouldn’t need consent from either bio parent so we never explored. (I know it seems silly to do it after all this time, but it really means a lot to me.) I know that my situation does meet the criteria for adult adoption, but I’m not sure if this is a ‘get an attorney’ kind of situation or if we can do it ourselves through CC. I’ve researched a lot, but I can’t find any forms for the petition or consent for my county.
If anyone could offer any advice on whether I should find an attorney to begin the process, how to get the forms, if we should do it ourselves, and/or how the process works that would be greatly appreciated!
