AITA for yelling at a woman while she was down?

r/

I (40f) have a small cleaning company that does move out cleans. Today I was cleaning out a unit with D, one of my employees. We keep the door to the unit open as we are going in and out grabbing supplies and getting rid of garbage.
On one of my trips out I noticed a woman taking her dog out without a leash. I noticed because this is such a pet peeve of mine. However, also not my business so I just ignored it.

Ten minutes later, I am cleaning the kitchen when I hear D yell “can you come get your dog”. I go to see what’s happening and D is in the coat closet with this dog jumping on her. The dog is pretty big. (I am super ignorant when it comes to dog breeds but a reverse image search on Google says pit bull breed).

When the dog saw me, he switched to jumping on me. I tried to maneuver him out of the apartment but he was quick. He would run out and back in super fast. He grabbed a couple of our cloths and finally left the apartment and started running up abd down the hallways with them in his mouth.

I followed him to the hallway and his owner was nice where in site. I yelled down the hallway “Hello @ Can you come get your f**ing dog?” It was clear it was pissed. Finally this woman comes around the corner and tries to get him and he just runs by her multiple times, eventually knocking her over. She was fine but this is where I feel like I am probably TA. She was clearly overwhelmed, but instead of helping I bitched her out. I said something along the lines of “You are endangering my employees. Get your dog under control and use a leash.” By say, I mean yelled.

Finally another tenant came out and grabbed the dog and helped bring him to her apartment

So she touched on a couple pet peeves of mine. She was reckless with her dog who she clearly couldn’t control and that put the safety of my employee at risk. Because of that, I was probably harsher than I should have been. I usually prefer to help people rather than judge them. Once I calmed down I really started to feel like such an AH for how how handled that.

So reddit, AITA?

ESH. I get your annoyance but you could have handled it better.

Obviously that other person is an AH for having her dog off-leash.

  4. AncientWonder54 Avatar

So ESH, but I can’t say that I wouldn’t have done the same thing if I was already angry.

She should have had her dog on a leash, and yeah you should have probably tried to help her get up, but you were frustrated and angry.

INFO: Did the woman purposefully let out her dog? Or did the dog get loose?

  6. MarineBioMum Avatar

NTA she was on the floor only because she hasn’t trained her dog. That’s her fault. Who is to say that if you had went to help her the dog wouldn’t have went for you sensing your frustration and annoyance?
It’s a pet peeve of mine that regardless of breed owners get dogs and don’t train them. What if a person you were with was a child?

You were only looking out for the safety of you and your employees.

    Bordering ESH to NTA

She should’ve had her dog under control but honestly, this could’ve been handled differently.

  9. MiddleAged_BogWitch Avatar

NTA. She deserved to get yelled at. Poorly trained dogs allowed to run loose are a menace, as are their untrained owners.

NTA. Proud dog owner here. If your dog isn’t ready for off-leash time, it doesn’t get off-leash time.

It is reasonable for people to get very upset with you when you have breached this basic code. Her experience is a direct consequence of her decision.

    NTA

Untrained dogs are a hazard regardless of breed.

However, owners of bully breeds – a type that has a bad rap for a reason – need to be extra vigilant about containing them.

You had every right to be angry.  Even if it wasn’t being aggressive, the owner had no control over it and it was endangering you and your employee.

  12. Outrageous-Banana905 Avatar

N T A. what if the dog had been aggressive? Even small dogs can cause harm. Should have reported her to the landlord and animal control.

this random dog was inside of the apartment you were cleaning and stealing your supplies? safety issue.

Some people should not be allowed to own pets.

NTA. I am a crazy dog lady. I love dogs so much but I can’t stand when owners have an energetic, untrained dog when off leash.

  17. MargotLannington Avatar

NTA. The owner doesn’t give a shit & is not even trying to control her untrained dog. She is endangering the physical safety of everyone in the area, and she doesn’t care. She should be yelled at.

  18. MathematicianOdd4999 Avatar

NTA. Having a dog that out of control can be very dangerous for other people and the dog itself. You make sure she got the message, there is nothing wrong with that

  19. d0kt0rg0nz0 Avatar

NTA. People need to take control over *their* pets no matter what.

  20. Swimming-City-5001 Avatar

YTA, but good for you. You help drive the point through that she needs to control her job. Also report it to your company, so they can contact the owner to report it.

  21. Emergency_Shower_569 Avatar

Pet peeve of mine also. You are breaking the law by letting your dog be off leash

  22. blarryg Avatar

People who have large dogs but are not able to command control should have their dogs taken from them. Full stop. You should have yelled more and maybe spit a bit.

  23. wayward_painter Avatar

NTA this dog owner should not be a dog owner. This was assault with her dog, not her being the victim.

  24. Lem0nadeLola Avatar

It’s my pet peeve too so obviously I think you’re NTA. It’s just common sense to not have unleashed dogs in public areas. It’s bad enough when people who claim their dogs are “trained” do it, but people who can’t handle their dogs at all absolutely should not be putting their dog, themselves and strangers in danger.

NTA. It’s always pit owners, isn’t it?
