I’m(F22) pretty sure I am the asshole in this situation but I just want some clarity whether or not I’m the sole asshole here. I work (usually entirely alone) at a franchised restaurant connected to a franchised app. The issue is my boss doesn’t allow our store to accept coupons that the app provides, and the register screeches nonstop until you accept and order, so to refund an order I have to first accept and void it. This guy ends up ordering three separate orders to cash in on the same coupon three different times (in total he gets maybe eight entrees). Since I’m not supposed to accept coupons, I cancel all three.
Apparently, he doesn’t receive,( or pretends not to receive) the order cancellation comes when I’m in the middle of closing the register. I tell him his order is cancelled, he insists it’s not, so I let him inside and show him the void receipts. He still won’t accept it and is very indignant. I let him call my boss, who is also trying to explain that the store doesn’t accept coupons.
Now I had been pissed off for hours upon hours before hand over my own issues to the point of hyperventilating in the store (dramatic but true) and as i’m going through this with him, I could feel myself basically vibrating with anger and pulling all sorts of nasty faces. At one point, I emptied the tip jar infant of him and was said something like “here just take it and leave” which doesn’t really make sense. I guess in that moment I thought it would’ve been compensation for his wasted time and the return of my peace of mind.
Eventually, he pulls up his chase account and sees that each order has indeed been voided. He’s still pissed and is yelling about how we should’ve called him (this might not be wrong, but I’ve never successfully gotten through to a customer through the number on the receipt). Apparently he drove about thirty minutes to get these (three) orders. He says he’s never coming back to the store again, and I scream in the highest shrillest voice “GOOD!” out the door as he leaves.
Looking back I feel his anger was understandable and I regret being so sour. I feel I would be just as upset if I had been in his situation. My vindication was further diminished when my boss asked for a picture of the receipts and comes to the conclusion that I probably should’ve made the orders anyway because the money made would out weigh the money the coupons lost us.
I vented to my father about it and he blamed my boss for “putting me in a situation like that in the first place” since I would have just made the orders in the first place if not for her coupon policy.
So, am I the only asshole in this situation?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> I belie I was an asshole because I yelled at a customer who had a reason to be mad at me

INFO: So did you cancel the orders without contacting the customer to let him know? If the app allows the orders you have a responsibility to attempt to contact the customer regardless whether it would have been successful. If he hadn’t answered or the number was wrong then it would be on him but if you just cancelled them and didn’t even try to contact him I would understand his anger. So did you cancel without trying to contact him?
Sounds like your boss is TA and you should report them to corporate.
ESH. You should get a new job, because you do not sound equipped to work customer service. Your boss also sucks, because damn, what a horrible policy. I sincerely hope never to find myself at your restaurant.
I’m going to be honest, it seems sketchy your boss is having you void the app orders because of coupons. If your franchise and they’re assigning them then that means you are usually required to.
But that’s on your boss not you.
However taking it out on the customer for being upset for a valid reason was a bit of YTA but I get the frustration. Especially since you didn’t call him
> he blamed my boss for “putting me in a situation like that in the first place”
Repeat after me: Pa-pa, the internet told me to tell you that you are right.
ESH.
ESH
Accept the fucking coupons.
INFO why doesn’t your store accept coupons? Shouldn’t that’s be something the app needs to handle?
NTA. This whole situation could have happened WITHOUT buddy throwing a fit. Either way his order wasn’t being made. He didn’t need to sit and yell at you
Pretty much YTA here. Your mean faces and sarcasm did not help calm the patron.
NTA. You snapped a bit but honestly I don’t blame you, he was being rude over coupons and act like that. It’s fast food, not a wedding cake lol
No mama. You sound like you’re reaching the end of your rope. Take care of yourself. It sucks because I think you can recognize why he would be frustrated but I also will never understand why people waste their time freaking out on someone who has 0 say in policy.
People aren’t perfect, neither of you were here.
On the other side, we don’t know what type of day this guy had either so this may have been his breaking point. I’ve cried before because I thought I had food in my fridge and I was wrong and I set my mind on that meal all day ffs. Also, how would he know coupons aren’t accepted at a specific location? I’m sure they say that in the fine print but franchised companies are assholes for that.
At the end of the day, there was nothing you could have done to fix his problem. You even offered your tip money. But you were alone and cornered by an angry stranger. His behavior was unacceptable regardless. I doubt you’re a particularly terrible employee so please don’t let this weigh on you too much. It’s probably for the best he won’t patronize your specific location anymore. The owner sucks for putting you in that spot- especially since you work alone.
Take care of yourself, NTA.
NTA. he was rude.
