How come I never hear of men reading smutty books? Any of you guys read that stuff?

r/

Aside from porno magazines (if they’re even still a thing anymore), do any men out there read smutty books like how some women do? I’m talking straight up porno trash romance books lol.

I don’t read my smut, I listen to r/gonewildaudio for it.

  2. Damage_Brave Avatar

    Nope. Not interested.

Generally speaking, men are turned on by what they see; women by what they hear (read)

I just around a book a week and I’ve read a lot of shit over the years.

  5. apeliott Avatar

I found a book in the forest once when I was a kid (as is tradition…). It was a collection of erotic stories and “readers’ letters” to a famous porn mag. Like Literotica in paperback form.

Read it cover to cover, several times.

  6. DMmeNiceTitties Avatar

So I read A Court of Thorns and Roses a couple months ago just because I wanted to read a smut book and improve my sexting game. It was not as smutty as I thought it’d be although women have told me the later books gets smuttier later. I might read more, but I am definitely more of a visual smut guy. I gave it a chance though.

  7. rw_eevee Avatar

books no… but many years ago i used to read some smutty fanfics

  8. ActivityVirtual56 Avatar

No, I’m not into that. I’m more visually stimulated, and I think most men are too

    We like visuals

  10. Frankie-Knuckles Avatar

I started reading ACOTAR (gf recommended it) and enjoyed the world building and narrative pacing but gave up after the first book when the romance stuff became too much for me. It just felt so transparent, unrelatable (Feyre/woman’s perspective) and unexciting (male love interests, I’m straight). It’s just not written for men.

  11. SadSickSoul Avatar

Broaden it out to fiction in general, sure. Tickles the brain in a different way, and if it helps to have an emotional bond to rev the engines then written fiction is one of the easiest and best ways to convey those types of emotions. You can lose yourself in a scenario like that, especially if the characterization is good.

Put another way, I’m a bookworm by nature, of course that appeals to me.

  12. I-live-in-room-101 Avatar

I guess in a pinch I’d flick through quickly to find any pictures of boobs.

  13. SanguineOptimist Avatar

Well I don’t like to, but for some reason every science fiction author for the last 6 decades felt like they had to include some weird sex scene in every single book.

  14. Sempervirens47 Avatar

Ran across a collection of “Longarm” novels when I was in the Navy(Old West themed men’s sex fantasy.) It exists. Myself, I do sometimes enjoy it and I honestly think women write it better.

  15. Salty-Pack-4165 Avatar

Nope. Closest I ever got was “Don’t stand too close to a naked man” by Tim Allen. Great book by awesome guy but porn?Nah.

  21. Kdog122025 Avatar

I’ve read a few but it’s always from a women’s recommendation. Guys are more visual creatures so pictures are better for our monkey brains.

  22. GCanuck Avatar

I will apparently deviate from the norm here and admit I do. Literotica.com (nsfw ‘natch) is a frequent page visited.

I enjoy knowing why people are fucking. Just watching people getting fucked doesn’t always fit the need. Even when I’m watching the porn I’ll make up a story in my head about why this young lady is getting railed.

I will admit that the reading is often just a warm up, and I’ll switch over to the visual as it really does help get me over the line if the stories aren’t getting me there.

And now you all know far too much about my masturbatory habits.

  23. johnnyg8024 Avatar

I think alotta men do read smutty books but don’t think of or speak of them as being smut. Male-oriented books with smut tend to filter towards action adventure and power fantasies in my experience, like sci-fi/fantasy novels mostly centered around guns, swords, space warfare, whatever. It’s pretty much the same as women’s smut otherwise, with the driving force of the novel giving way to a chapter of fuckin’ every now and then. Then there’s manga, a ton of which is just constant fan service and people still don’t really think of it as smut even though there’s tons of tits and ass on display in them. Again, those are mostly action adventure and power fantasies, though in recent times they’ve given way to (still power fantasies but) more grounded slice of life shit like just being the very best at farming/running a shop/etc. and gathering a harem of attractive women. I guess the pattern is the classic male fantasy/urge/desire to be appreciated as the warrior/provider.

  24. NirgalFromMars Avatar

Gay dude here. I read smut AND write it.

But it probably has to do with me having some very niche links that are almost never represented in porn. So I have to make my own.

  25. Aspiring-Old-Guy Avatar

I wanted to learn how to write romance. My manager recommended the ACOTAR books. Read the first three. They weren’t bad. The first one is actually pretty great. I went back to full on fantasy later.

  26. FabulousPanther Avatar

Everything’s online and for free, so no mags. Those stories did get me hard back in the 90s.

  27. OCDimprovingWriter Avatar

Yes. I’ve also written it. The issue a lot of guys here are having is that most of it is written for women. The stuff written for men has more visual descriptions and more beat by beat descriptions of the action. It’s more about what the characters feel, as opposed to how they feel.

  28. Apart-Garage-4214 Avatar

Why read when you can watch?

  29. Bear_grin Avatar

    I tried.

I honestly hate how they’re written. They use the most disgusting words to describe sex, and the dirty talk is just SO fucking bad I found myself getting more angry than anything else.

In general, the story that’s built around the sex scenes is generally written SO fucking poorly. So, I can’t get into them on that aspect.

Then the fact that all the leads are so interchangeable that it’s not even funny. All the male leads look the same except for a couple of differences. The women have more care put into them, but they still (usually) read the same to me.

I end up knowing what’s going to happen before the next page, and… for some reason? It’s not as fun as when I can tell what’s about to happen in a movie.

  30. datgatomf Avatar

As a frequent flyer on Literotica and a few other sites I’ve tried like two dozen smutty books but usually they feel overlong and the sex scenes are kinda weak. Me and some of my home girls will sometimes recommend books to each other!

  31. Constant-Bicycle386 Avatar

I actually write custom erotica. A lot of my clients are men. In fact, I imagine all of them are.

  32. AddictedToMosh161 Avatar

Technically I did read smut. I used to do a lot of pure text rpgs as a teen and that always turned to romance and well … So I suppose every time I did read an answer it was smut.

  33. THC_UinHELL Avatar

I’m more of a visual guy

  34. bunkbump Avatar

I use to read playboy after thoroughly studying the pictures. The articles were always interesting and rarely seemed erotic. Even they knew men are mostly visual.

  35. HerbDaLine Avatar

I read a couple about 15 years ago. They are written for women to read. If you want stories written for men go to Literotica dot com.

  36. UbiquitousPixel Avatar

I attempted because my ex (she was just becoming my girlfriend at the time) was really into one book series and I wanted to understand her more. I also wanted to see what turned her on and see into the world of what women fantasize about to maybe improve how I go about it. I somewhat liked the main male character enough in some aspects so I read it.

It’s not for everyone. And it gets very unrealistic. You can tell a woman wrote it for specially a woman’s fantasy with no intention really for a guy to read it. But the idea of the character being this intimidating figure, vigilante of sort more akin to say a Punisher like figure, being a badass and protective, and having the confidence to be morally gray is something I’d argue a lot of men wish they could be. As in, a lot of us fantasize about being some dark figure that can save people in gritty ways and get a very attractive girl to love us despite our flaws.

But the other parts…the chase and borderline toxic or morally wrong/creepy things said main character does that absolutely in real life women would not want…but for someone reason have fantasy about…is very fucked up. Or just stupid. The book was written in chapters that were shifting perspectives between the man main character and the woman main character. I really only somewhat enjoyed the dark fantasy side of the male protagonist…but found my eyes rolling trying to page through the female protagonist parts. And I only got somewhat engaged in the story when the male protagonist was off doing some sort of anti hero like tactics or being protective.

I like dark and twisted things though sometimes. And I like dark misunderstood vigilantes and anti heroes. I like gritty dark shows and movies. And sometimes yeah, I like a little darker fantasy.

But I HIGHLY doubt a large majority of men would tolerate the book and laugh at wasting their time with it. I indulged because she tried to be into my comic book characters and understand them.

  37. princetartaglia Avatar

fanfic yeah. i also write smutty fics. but reading actual smutty books, i havent gotten into any. mainly because i dont want any plot when i read, just the smut

  38. lilacs_and_marigolds Avatar

I read a smutty trilogy by Anne Rice a few years ago. That’s about it, though.

  39. Boy-412 Avatar

The only one I liked is “the smoke theif” and I’m not sure it’s that smutty.

  40. Arqideus Avatar

I like to open up literatica.com every once in awhile. They have some pretty good stories to be honest. Some don’t even contain sex and they’re still good. There are a lot of stories that are good and mix in sex here and there instead of making it the sole theme.

I think imagination is more powerful than any porn you’re ever going to watch. I watch porn to get inspiration on boobs, but I still like to imagine my hypothetical stepmom having to cram in on my lap on a long car ride to college where my nonexistent dad is driving and my nonexistent step mom is scantily clad as she relaxes in my lap and the temperature is hot. 🥵

    It’s fun.

  46. No-Revolution1571 Avatar

They’re never even good. So no.

And they clearly arent marketed toward us. It’s like video porn. Very heavily marketed towards men specifically. Books are heavily marketed toward women specifically.

And that’s okay. Not everything has to be completely equal

  47. Alkiaris Avatar

I mean if I’m looking for extremely hyper-specific kink content it sometimes is only available in text, but I can’t say I’ve read anything longer than a few pages (except the occasional h-game)

  50. Ok-Awareness-4401 Avatar

I’ll read (and write) some erotica. I don’t want a novel, I don’t want a big back story before it gets slutty.

  51. BadgerBadgerCat Avatar

I find the ones written for men tend to be of the “her boobs boobed boobily with each thrust of Maxx Power’s girthy, monument-like member” variety, while the ones for women that I’ve read tend to either be too tame (“she exposed her ankles, her face flushed red with excitement”) or… monster fucking.

  52. ColdCamel7 Avatar

Yup… I’ve even written it before, and have been considering starting again and publishing on Literotica

I’ve never been turned on by watching porn… I prefer to read and write it

  53. Responsible_Wave_277 Avatar

Excellent question and I am saddened by the answers.

  54. mmmeadi Avatar

I think a lot of those smut books take a female perspective. Romance is something that happens to the female protagonist. It’s hard for a straight male audience to relate because romance and courting is a lot of work–it doesn’t just happen like it’s portrayed.

  55. No_Salad_68 Avatar

Yep. In my 20s I used to buy Penthouse Forum which was sex stories. These days r/gonewildstories which is free.

  56. BAakhir Avatar

Men are more visually stimulated, hence why manga and porn are more popular among men.

  57. reignoferror00 Avatar

Well, sort of. Most of it, if not all, I read online and not in book form (certainly nothing I suspect you’d likely find in the women’s Romance section of a bookstore, though if someone who knew me somewhat recommended and lent me one, I’d likely at least try it).

Way back when, I used to buy and read magazines like Penthouse Letters. I also had around that time a book or two of classic erotic short stories. Now I read erotic stories online, such as ones from Literotica and similar sites.

Much of the Literotica categories I gravitate towards are Romance, Erotic Couplings, First Time, Mature, Novels and Novellas, Taboo/Incest, NonHuman, Sci-Fi & Fantasy. Least likely to look at Anal, Crossdressing, BDSM, Fan Ficiton & Celebrities, Chain Stories, Fetish, Gay Male, Interracial Love. Transgender, and Reluctant/Non-Consent.

Also read certain fan fiction sites that have R rated stories with sex , along with h-manga (think sort of erotic graphic novel/comic). Some of it is non-human/Science Fiction, some branches out into the anthropomorphic realm (FimFiction, SoFurry, and the Furry category (along with many other categories) in Luscious.net.

Some of the stories online are really well written long stories that just have a sex aspect in them. Some of them are shorter, with the plot and character being secondary at best.

Spider Robinson wrote a weird fantasy/sci-fi smutty book about a brothel that was a fun read

  62. theshwedda Avatar

Men are turned on visually, women turned on emotionally.

It makes sense that our respective porns would be visual for men and story-driven for women.

To quote a certain redneck comedian,
“When women watch strippers, the guy strippers all gotta have jobs too. Like, oooooo he’s a sexy fireman! Oooo he’s a sexy lawyer!

When men get strippers they have one job, and that job is stripping.”

  63. seanc6441 Avatar

Most men want the most direct and effective method.

  64. ron3090 Avatar

A long time ago, I read a lot of erotica and even wrote some. Didn’t feel the need for that any more once I got married.

More recently, my wife has been reading a lot of “steamy” novels like Stephanie Archer’s books. She talks up how filthy they are a lot, so I figured I’m read some to see what was so good.

I thought they were pretty boring. The bulk of the books felt like watching a grown woman play with Barbies: the characters were all predictable and the dialogue felt unnatural. The men were very obviously written by a woman in a way that’s difficult to describe.

When the books did get to sex scenes, they honestly weren’t dirty enough. Sure, they may have been more realistic than trashy internet erotica, but the author had to stay committed to these being real books with actual plots. The scenes would eventually end and dump you back into the rest of the plot that you didn’t really care about.

Overall, if I want to jack off then I want to jack off. I don’t want to wade through hours of will-they/won’t-they.

  68. Paul_Nkognito Avatar

Aside from men generally are more responsive to visual stimulus than anything else, I do think there are some nuances.

    • There are lots of guys in r/hotpast which enjoy reading/hearing/sharing sexual stories involving their partners. There are other subs about slutty confessions, stories gone wild, etc. So, some guys do enjoy it. (I do, sometimes!)
    • I mentioned this post to my wife. She pointed out there aren’t much for smutty books targeted to men. I also mentioned there is a stigma. If a woman is reading a smutty book on the bus or at Barnes & Noble…people wouldn’t think as much about it. …But if a guy was reading a smutty book in public, the general reaction would be, “Call the cops on that gross pervert.”
    • In general, once a man is turned on he wants to climax. Whereas women are better at handling a slow, steady build up. They can let that flame burn for a while. Thus, even the smutty “literature” men do read…is short and generally for the purpose of getting off ASAP.

I enjoy reading slutty stories sometimes. But, I think part of it is my age (46), some erectile dysfunction, and my wife and I have a very playful/fantasy/sexy-talk sex life. So, either of us reading sexy stories gives us fuel for the bedroom.

  69. DirtysouthCNC Avatar

Because if I’m reading smut, it’s gotta be part of a genuinely good world and narrative. 99% of smut books are the literary equivalent of stick figure drawings. Crudely and amateurishly written, with vague or porno-level dialogue. Its beneath me, literally too shitty to bother reading.

  70. purplecomet246 Avatar

    Does nhentai counts 👀?

  71. Tayaradga Avatar

I mean….. Do you count dark fantasy smut? Lothaire Enemy of the Old, McRieve, pretty much the entire Immortals After Dark by Kreskey Kole series. Idk, vampires and werewolves and shit finding love and having hot steamy sex is just right up my alley.

I’ll also read some more wholesome romance dark fantasy books like The Blood of Eden series (forgot who it’s by). That one actually follows a singular story throughout the series, the other one is all a bunch of fantasy smut but aren’t exactly related to each other (unless one of the other books connects them all? Idk). Anyway, yea there’s no smut in The Blood of Eden, it’s honestly more of a fantasy horror adventure with romance sprinkled in. Really good series, highly recommend.

  72. Acceptable-Status599 Avatar

I like to read it in a woman’s ear while she lay naked atop me. My favourite is when the woman is suffering for attention from her main squeeze cause he’s got a new squeeze and goes on an absolute erotic tear trying to regain it. Always so much passion.

  73. Sabconth Avatar

I cannot begin to express how much men are missing out by not reading smut.

Porn in comparison is a 0 out of 10 on the heat scale compared to smut.

Good smut is like being doused in gasoline and set on fire in terms of intensity, it makes porn look pedestrian.

Honestly one of the hottest things I can imagine is doing a buddy read or annotated read of a spicey book with a woman.

  74. Chapea12 Avatar

I do. It’s great, love it. But I mostly use it to palate cleanse from other stuff I’m reading.

I won’t let anybody convince me that reading about a magical college with dragons, fights, and fucking isn’t fun

  78. TheBlackManX23 Avatar

I listen and read smut, I’ve just finished one called Priest

And I openly admit that I enjoy reading not just smut but also all sorts of romance

  79. Meltoff05 Avatar

Read 4th wing series and enjoyed it (though not for the smut) and tried A Court of Thorns and Roses, I simply do not like the dark brooding dominant male character these books seem to have, and the female leads who dislike them at first (rightfully so because they are usually dicks…) but then fall for them and can’t live without them. It just seems so young adult, for lack of a better term.

I would enjoy a well written mature book, just haven’t found one that’s my style.

  80. mr_lab_rat Avatar

I would never think of looking for it. Seems like a waste of time since video exists.

  86. bothsidesoftheknife Avatar

I’ve frequently heard that men prefer visual media for this sort of thing. But I enjoy well written smutt sometimes. Especially if it’s an otherwise hard to access kink.

Erotic audios are also fantastic. I really enjoy hearing people emote and enjoy themselves.

  87. HungryAd8233 Avatar

Hell yeah! I don’t care much for video porn at all. I’m in the film/TV business, and the quality of production, acting, scripts are just godawful.

I read Asa Akira’s first autobiography. It’s quite smutty with details and all but at the time I was trying to read a lot of different life stories. It started with Brock Lesnar’s autobiography then to Asa then to an African child soldier. After that last book I switched to people who suffered huge human rights abuses and had horrible lives.
Having typed that out and read it, it kinda looks insane.
