my grandmother’s passport is expired. she was refused a real id when renewing her drivers license because the name on her marriage certificate is her maiden name, which is different from her current name. she married in 1960 in new york, and the license doesnt state anything about her current name. she never received a court order to change her name, she just decided to start using her current name and has that name on both her passport and drivers license.
what is your advice? can we still obtain a passport when her name is different on her drivers license and marriage certificate? do we need her to get a legql name change? what are our options?
Location: Massachusetts (but the marriage license is from New York)

For how long has the passport been expired? If it has been less than five years then submit a standard renewal and hopefully it goes through (longer than five years would require a new application).
