I keep hearing that Cory Booker gave a 24-hour speech at the Senate. Does this literally mean he spoke for 24 hours straight, without pause? Or does ‘speech’ mean something different in this context? I’m confused!

He spoke for about 25 hours straight, minus a bit of time that his colleagues used to ask him questions to give him a bit of a rest. But yes, he basically spoke for a full calendar day nonstop, and without just resorting to reading from the phone book or whatever.
Yes, he stood at the lectern and kept speaking for the entire time. His only short breaks were when other Senators (like Schumer) asked him long, protracted questions designed to allow him time to catch his breath. He took sips of water, but never left the lectern. He paused only when his Democratic colleagues asked him questions.
NBC News says 25 hrs 4 min
Daily Beast says 25 hrs 5 min before he took a bathroom break.
Happy 10th cake day!
No washroom break? All coherent talk?
In the words of SpongeBob… 25!
Is there a recording of his whole speech somewhere?
And it was inspiring as hell. This is a loong clip before and after he broke the record for time. To give you an idea. Almost wall to wall good stuff in there
Cory booker breaks record
He also did interviews after, they won’t let this guy sleep.
He held the floor for 25 hours. He got breaks when others members asked questions.
So this is the first I’m hearing of this — can someone explain what he was talking about, and what justified 25 straight hours of it (also how many other people were in the room? Did they come and go? I’m not hating I’m just really unaware that this was even possible)
I’ve had to essentially lecture for almost a full 8-hour day as part of some training I was in charge of, and I remember getting tired of talking after about an hour at a time. I can’t imagine pulling off a 24-hour session like this.
Cory Booker has watched the Stackhouse Filibuster episode of the West Wing more than once.
25 hours and five minutes.
Serious question. What was the point of this? Just to do it?
He should be anointed as the patron saint of filibustering lol. What a G.
There were pauses when he took questions. Otherwise yes he spoke the whole time
my favourite line: this isn’t about right or left, it is about right and wrong.
Yes, he spoke for all that time. I just read that he’d been fasting and dehydrating himself in preparation so he wouldn’t have to use the bathroom.
Legend
I didnt like him during the primaries, but I gotta respect this
Booker is a beast! He finally knocked that racist POS Strom Thurmond from #1 in the longest talking. The fact that Booker is Black just makes it sweeter since Strom spoke 24 hours in an effort to prevent the Civil Rights Act from passing.
Senate rules state that to hold the floor, the person speaking must remain standing, cannot leave their position, and must speak more-or-less continuously (with one exception, which I talk about below) If they sit down, leave the podium, or fall silent for more than a brief pause, they are considered to have yielded the floor.
However, a Senator may yield for a question without yielding the floor. That’s why other senators continually asked if Booker would yield for a question. It gives the speaking senator an excuse to stop speaking (drink, rest their voice, think of more things to say) while still following the rules of the senate.
So, this is all to say that Senator Booker did not literally speak non-stop for twenty-four hours; nor did Strom Thurmond, who held the previous record of 24 hours, 18 minutes. They both spoke for as long as they could without yielding the floor.
I’m just glad Strom Thurmond no longer holds the record
He stood there without bathroom breaks or food for 25 hours and 4 minutes. He had 2 glasses of water that he drank off of for 25 hours and 4 minutes. His only ability to “have moments of break” were when his colleagues asked questions and he could rest his voice. He answered and responded like a Boss. He read constituents letters and continued to Stand and Communicate. He is the kind of leader that we need, We Need, WE NEED, and Deserve. This government coup is not only deplorable, it’s an embarrassment. It’s not only Unconstitutional, it’s illegal. It goes against everything that These United States was based on and for what civil and individual liberties stands for.
His vocal cords are going to be wrecked for awhile, huge respect
He broke the record previously held by Strom Thurmon (R-SC) who filibustered for 24:18 to delay passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. .
Actually, 25 hours and about 4 minutes. It was awesome.
Was crazy jumping in at like 23 hours and he seemed like he was having a good time. Maybe he was like high on exhaustion but he was still very coherent and it was pretty impressive.
It only took 70+ years for someone bad-ass like Cory Booker to stand up to Strom Thurmond‘s 24-hour filibuster/speaking record and smash it!! I can’t think of a better time for him to do it than now because now we need more people as passionate and committed and as articulate and compelling as Cory Booker – he knows what time it is frfr
No, he spoke for 25 hours straight.
Fuck it, I’d vote for him for president
Dems need a filibuster brigade.
Could other people leave? If so what exactly is the point?
There is a moment, around 1am E.S.T. last night, where he read a letter of a constituent who had parkinsons and told the shared story of he and her living with family members who have it and passed away. He gives thia very sobering conversation about the real pain the abrupt policies of the trump administration are causing, and grounds his conversation in a baseline understanding of invoking policies that are both empathetic to people’s needs and good for the country.
It was very powerful and I really appreciate the time he took to share real stories of people struggling instead of filling the time with trivial banter.
It’s good to see his relationship with Rosario Dawson helped his endurance.
See that wallet in there. That’s his, the one that says Bad Mother Fucker. Yes, he did. Check the highlights.
He’s a machine.
He’s 55??????
Is there a way to find the transcripts. I tried googling and it’s all fucking ads and not news.
No. He took a few breaks when people asked questions and for a scheduled prayer. Pretty darn close, though.
Wow. 🥱 Riveting. So when is the revolution?
Which is why I said indwelling catheters. I’m sorry I only used indwelling in the second sentence Jesus
Sorry if this was already asked or answered, but do all senators have to be there at the beginning? Can they leave? How many left? Did any stay the whole way through?
Was someone in the audience the whole time he was talking? Did people go to bed and come back the next morning?
I’m wondering though what it accomplished , really. This administration is chaotic and potentially dangerous at best , it feels like nothing short of force is going to do anything
Amazing only wish it would help make more people wake up. Even a small bit of historical understanding makes you see where the MAGA/GOP is headed
Yes. He also listed things that rhyme with Cory for a good five hours.
When I tuned in for awhile this afternoon, right about when Duckworth was speaking, he was definitely looking a little punchy but he was holding on. He talked about how he grew up well off but was taught to never take it for granted and to use that to help others. He also threw some religion in there and for a minute sounded like a tent revival preacher but he was making his point that true Christians would never do the things the Trump regime is doing. My opinion of him has been up and down over the years but I think his heart is in the right place still. I know some people were mocking him for doing it but damn, at 25 hours I’d be hallucinating, so good for him.
Google it. There have been articles written every so many hours about it starting around 18 hours (that I saw).
You’re allowed to yield for a question which they can ramble long enough to let you recover but other than that, you’re speaking. From a standing position no less
