Offer letter rescinded

r/

Location: CA

I had received and signed an offer letter from a new company. It was a great bump in title, pay, and growth opportunity.

About a week later, I turned in my resignation notice to my current company, giving more than 2 weeks notice. It was a tough decision as Ive performed well for years and consistently blew out my sales target, and even walked away from a President’s club trip this fall.

I booked my flight and hotel to visit the HQ (also in CA) for orientation. BUT just one business day prior to my start date, the new company shares the news that they are restructuring and are rescinding the offer. I am just shocked.

Has anyone else ran into this before? Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unless you have significant losses, like paying to sell your house and move elsewhere, you likely have no recourse. However, CA is extremely worker-friendly and it’s possible you’ve omitted a crucial detail, so you might as well consult with a local labor attorney.

In the meantime, start looking for a new job.

Unfortunately this can happen. There is really nothing you can do legally.

I suspect they may have discovered something about you in a background check. Restructures are planned well in advance. The excuse they gave doesn’t make any sense.
