i was 10 minutes late to my first day at work

r/

hi everyone, i’m unsure if this is a good place to post this, if not feel free to delete. just as the title says, i was 10 minutes late to my first day at a corporate job. i was ready on time and left on time, i had 10 minutes to spare but when i arrived, the location had absolutely 0 parking despite being an employee-only parking lot.

i of course panicked and tried my best to find parking, it doesn’t help that this is an area that i’ve never been to. next thing i know 6 minutes has gone by and still no parking space. i finally found one but by that time, it was already 8:57ish and i had to run inside, wait for the elevator and find the place. i was greeted by one of the HR representatives and i profusely apologized, but turns out there were 6 other HR representatives inside the room who all saw me come in late.

no one said anything, but i feel like i made a horrible first impression and this isn’t like me at all. i know next time to come EXTRA early to prepare for the parking situation but i can’t get over this and i couldn’t even enjoy my first day properly because of this. i understand i could have arrived earlier in hindsight, especially because i’ve never been to the area.

any advice will be greatly appreciated

Mistakes happen, if anyone ever brings it up, just reiterate the truth.

This is not how we were meant to live.

Honestly, I think you’re overthinking it. Apologize again to your direct manager, then kill it at the job. Actions speak louder than words

Life happens sometimes, just remember early is on time in that sort of world. Try your best to plan to be there 30 minutes early, that way if something happens you have a solid buffer period. That should be understanding.

Accept it and move on. Not much else to do.

Got lost and was 1 hour late to the interview of my first professional job…… Still got the job…. Move on, you can’t change the past. I’d imagine nobody cares unless if you are coming in late and leaving ‘early’ every day, but mostly, if you are not getting your assignments done….

I wouldn’t sweat it. I would leave earlier next time. Consider being on-time being late. Now you know.

I wouldn’t sweat it, I’m sure they are aware of parking problems and you aren’t the first to be in this situation.

I would recommend asking them for parking recommendations to show you are pro actively trying to avoid this in the future
