I stole $70,000 worth of Bitcoin out of spite and now I have nothing

r/

Few days ago, I wrote about this in TrueOffMyChest sub but a few Redditors didn’t seem to believe me. So, I will try to write here instead.

Ten months ago, I (29M) stole approximately $70,000 worth or 0.9 Bitcoin from the company out of spite and also desperation. I exploited their platform’s weakness and then siphoned it to my account overnight. I won’t divulge in detail how I did it since most fintech’s platforms are actually similarly weak and can be easily exploited by anyone who oversees its operation. Anyway, the sloppy ass company terminated me after a week, filed a lawsuit & injunction against my bank accounts. I decided I would not return the money.

Two reasons why I did it: I found out that they pulled the exit scam on their token, and I needed money to pay off my accumulating student & credit card debts. The job itself never paid well above my cost of living and I always financially struggled with providing for my parents more than myself. Finding out from my sister that they wasted our salaries on gambling truly set me off. It hurt that they did this while there were times I had to dig through trash for leftovers simply because I could not afford food.

When I cashed out the money, I spent it buying my childhood dream truck, music equipment, paying off my buddy & siblings’ debts, and donating to shelters. They don’t know about this and I told them I had won a lottery.

Months have gone by – I’ve sold the truck, laptop & some of my belongings to survive being jobless. Right now, I’ve got nothing in my pockets and haven’t eaten anything in two days. Sometimes, I feel like ending things but I am not ready for my toes to be tagged yet.

Haha, misread as “ate”(somehow) instead of stole

Gotta have lows to feel the highs! Fuck them and good for you. I would get a job at a similar company and steal more this time.

I’m sorry for your family that they have such a generous but also stupid sibling.

Looks like you dig your own hole! You can’t justify stealing! It is simply wrong! Period!

If someone said to me 15 years ago that they stole 0.9 Bitcoin I would have genuinely laughed and asked why they’d even bother doing it in the first place

It seems like you were unwise with your 70k, but I guess that’s life.

A $70k comeup and the first thing you do is buy a truck? You deserve to have lost it all
