I’ll start by saying that I’m not one of those “animals should be treated the same as humans” type of people who put their pet(s) on a high pedestal. With that being said though, I do believe that having the capability to abuse or be cruel to any innocent animal is highly indicative of a deeper issue that (a lot of the time) leads to those same people becoming murderers/abusers to humans if left unchecked. From what i understand, there are cases where animal abusers have faced prison time for decent stretches, but as a society in general we still treat this crime like a misdemeanor. The only response to this i ever hear is “abusing animals is not the same as abusing humans” which is true, but I think we should judge these types of people (both societally and legally) based on the merits of their character and not the act itself.
Of course, I understand that people who are fucked up mentally will always do fucked up things regardless of how society views it or reprimands them for it. I just find it odd that we have all this research and data that proves animal abuse manifests itself into other forms of abuse in so many cases but we still only give them a slap on the wrist. Obviously, i know that not all animal abusers go on to become these type of people but, regardless, they’re still abusing an innocent being unprovoked.

They’re animals. Get over it. We won.
im gonna side track this to saying that the abuse of ai and robots should be legal.
All 50 states have a felony animal cruelty charge. Also, no one should receive the death penalty or life in prison for animal cruelty.
Since most people support the factory farming industry that means most of the population would go to jail.
animal cruelty to serial killer or actual human cruelty pipeline is real and idk why it isnt taken as seriously. idc if you dont think animal abuse isnt as bad as human abuse. people should then care that animal abuse can lead and has been shown to lead to human abuse in several serial killer cases. so for those who care about humans, maybe they should care about animal cruelty to protect the species they love.
We kill and eat animal.
People who eat meat contribute directly to animal cruelty every time they eat animals, but nobody involved actually wants to be held accountable for it.
Do you include the animals that are routineley abused and exploited like cows pigs chicken, horses etc or do you just mean cats and dogs? If its the first, that’s basiaclly veganism, of its the second, its not an unpopular opinion
Pretty sure animal cruelty is a felony charge in at least most of the States, but I’m not completely sure.
Would that include people who make their pets obese?
Having this opinion while also eating meat is hilarious.
Yes. People who take part in any abuse/neglect for any living being should rot in jail. Sick vile pieces of garbage.
You can’t spell slaughter-house without laughter
It’s weird that you think we should take murderers and abusers seriously. They lost that right when they committed their crimes.
I agree, but because there isn’t anything to gain by penalizing animal abuse less. Even if you personally believe that crimes against humans are worse, you don’t need to be light on crimes against other animals just to show that it’s proportionally not as bad. All of those crimes should be treated equally heinous under the law… If it leads to inhumane treatment of perpetrators then that’s a justice issue that we needed to reform anyway.
The problem with this is you’d then have to apply this to ALL living things for your ideology to work.
Even if you just want to include animals only, that means you’d have to have that same energy towards roaches, hornets, neematodes, ticks, bed bugs, mosquitoes, horse flys, lantern flys, house flys, maggots etc. If not then that means you’re being selective with which animals deserve to be treated better than others and if you can be selective then so can others
So how would we define “cruelty” or “abuse”? There’s plenty of acts performed on animals that are considered reasonable or even “necessary”. We don’t consider all forms of harming an animal to be a negative reflection of the person inflicting the harm, we don’t treat it like some kind of indication of psychopathy that will go on to escalate to being violent to humans.
Should people who eat animals receive the same punishment as someone who commits an act of cannibalism?
I disagree, especially for young people. Compassion is taught, and some people were never lucky enough to have parents who cared enough to teach them. Teach people better. Punishment only makes them worse.
Idk rapists barely even get arrested so probably not
As a vegetarian I believe growing animals just to eat them is animal cruelty. If you are interested in eating meat feel free to hunt for them (in the wild not on a ranch where they are being grown to be hunted).
Where do we go from here? Do we stop growing animals just to eat them, and if we find people doing it we sentence them to life in prison?
naaaaaa
I personally think that people who don’t think that animals are equal to us put themselves on a pedestal.
This is why President Trump made animal abuse a felony.
Imagine eating meat and saying this lmao
Yes, regardless of whether one thinks animals and human lives are of equal value, someone who hurts an animal would definitely hurt a human if they thought they would not get caught.

Are you vegan?
The reason this mentality makes us feel good is that we want to protect innocent animals and white knight the whole issue. However reality is rarely that simple. If we made the penalty for animal abuse the same as murder, people would absolutely just murder the animals and throw them away if there was a chance they’d get in trouble. They may get caught or they may not. However I can tell you it will lead to a lot less surrenders of pets that people cannot take care of anymore and a lot of landfill pets.
The reason the penalty for ever crime isn’t life in prison is victims lives will now be weighed against the perpetrators own. And in that contest the victim loses 100% of the time.
As humans we have a bias towards our own species. That said, I do agree, but as long as we have that prebuilt bias that allowed us to survive in the past, we will never reach a 100% equilibrium for rights between humans and animals.
People that leave their dog at home unattended to bark all day should get 3 year prison sentences.
Eh, the worst thing about this I learned is that people who collect horrible videos with animals are more likely to collect CP. The Kero The Wolf incident was like an n=1 study. When you find an animal abuser, chances are they are also a pedophile.
Yes, but if you eat/use animal products, you are committing or paying for animal abuse on the largest possible scale.

Factory farming enters the chat
Anyone who disagrees needs to read The Lost Dogs. It was so well written and while the early chapters gutted me, the overall story is so impacting.
I think the issue there is that animal cruelty could be nebulously defined
