What does fuck even mean? It’s a multipurpose profanity word that depicts anger, dismissal, insults, disbelief and an all around general intensifier. Because of its universality I feel it’s weight as a swear word is diluted becoming a lighter form of expressing emotion.
But shit… shit is nasty. Shit is personal. It’s literally the worst part of you. The waste, the unwanted. Shit, standalone is a word that evokes grotesque imagery and as a result it is a better intensifier.
It’s harshness allows phrases such as “that’s the shit!” to feel more expressive than if someone said “fucking awesome!”.
In another example, when commonly used as an insults, “fuck you!” is dwarfed by phrases such as “eat shit!” or “you peice or shit!” because shit is more primal, raw disgusting word.
