Something I randomly thought of a few days ago is that, technically, Texas is a coastal state. Whenever I think of it, I always picture the inland areas with deserts and stuff. But Texas does have beaches. Why does no one ever mention them? I looked them up—they aren’t super pretty, but is that why?

South Padre Island is a very popular beach resort island, and gets pretty crazy during Spring Break.
There are other beach resort towns, like Galveston and Port Aransas, but both have had the misfortune of getting hit by hurricanes in the recent past.
I’ve only been to a beach near Galveston. It was a very narrow beach and the water was not very clear like it is at the beaches in AL and FL we frequent. Other than that, it was a regular beach, I guess.
The Mississippi River pours tons of silt into the Gulf which washes towards Texas. As a result, beaches like Galveston have brown water and the sand isn’t white. It’s “natural pollution” but nonetheless it isn’t the prettiest.
Things get prettier as you go south to areas like South Padre Island.
West of the Mississippi the beaches suck. East nice
Go to AL or FL for the best Gulf of America beaches
Texas is fuckin huge. They have pretty much every climate and geography in our country represented
Galveston is a fun beach town with the saltiest water I’ve ever been in
South Padre Island is touristy AF but a nice beach
I have only been to Galveston and South Padre island beaches, both were great beaches and I had a ton of fun at both.
They aren’t pretty, the water is gross, and the beach culture is trashy. If you want to sit on gravely sand with your feet in brown water breathing in exhaust fumes from a lifted F250 that’s parked on the beach, Texas beaches are for you lol
Did Charles Barkley write this post?
Texas beaches are nasty, they are fun but the water is always so dirty looking.
They do have beaches but they aren’t great. Lots of pollution and crime.
Galveston and south padre are gross. Mustang island and north padre are nice. Also funny you associate Texas with desert because almost 80% is not desert but lush hill country and farmland
AL- Alabama & FL – Florida are two states east of Texas.
South Padre is decent.
Everything else is terrible.
The Gulf streams are not favorable to Texas beaches. The sand and the currents are not as attractive as other regions. Partly because of this, Texas hasn’t developed it’s beaches for tourism but rather for industry, power generation, and shipping.
I lived in Texas for seven years. I started out living in Florida with real beaches. Texas beaches are gross to me. The water always looks murky and dirty.
The Mississippi River combined with the currents in the Gulf of America don’t treat the Texas coast nicely. There are some nicer beaches there but nothing like the Southern Atlantic beaches of Florida or even better the Caribbean islands.
Most Gulf of Mexico beaches are “meh”, and some are gross.
50 Years ago I took a dip in the gulf by Texas. Came out and my red swimsuit had tiny drops of oil on it.
I grew up swimming in cape cod waters. I won’t put my big toe in Texas waters.
