A lot of people in Lower Manhattan probably had crazy hairstyles for a few days after 9/11 due to haircuts being abruptly interrupted mid way through and nearby salons being closed in the immediate aftermath.

Now THIS is a shower thought
I can’t believe I’ve never heard or thought this in the last 24 years.
Haven’t seen a good one like this for a while
There aren’t that many salons near WTC plaza, and people who weren’t in the towers had plenty of time to evacuate.
The attacks started a little after 8am on a Tuesday. I’m not too sure there were many barbers/salons open quite that early or that they would be particularly busy if they were.
Also, that would be an insanely expensive place to have a barbershop or salon.
This would be a solid shower thought if the attacks didn’t start before places like salons open.
This is a good shower thought but I disagree. First tower hit at 8:46am EST and I don’t think any barber shop/ salons are open at that time.
I’ve thought about this in the past and it kicks around again every few years…like what if some one was in the middle of getting a buzz cut with significant trim? If power went out or had to evacuate they wouldn’t have finished. Probably could just finish with cheap scissors else where, but you’re probably going around at least half a day looking crazy with half a hair cut.
Some fades never got to fade out
About a year after 9/11, as I was leaving my apartment building around 7:30 am for work, I noticed the busy corner deli, (with a hair salon above) had gained a huge crack in the wall.
When I returned home later that day, the whole building was completely gone.
This was on the corner of Greenwich and Rector, just South of the South Tower.
I was there. No salons were open that early in the morning. And that part of lower Manhattan wasn’t known exactly for salons. Think more greasy lunch spots for the finance crowd at work.
I remember Chelsea Jeans being covered in ash though. When they reopened they even cordoned off a section of the window display to preserve it still covered in ash. For years until they went out of business.
I was working about 10 blocks north of the towers.
For us, it really wasn’t “abrupt” until the 2nd plane hit. For the 17 minutes in between we were just staring out our window in confusion and horror.
It was the 2nd plane that made us run for the stairs.
