In my experience, if they’re coming back on stage, all the lights are off or dimmed and it’s a bit hard to navigate the area to leave. Some shows have multiple encores planned.
Once the entire show is over, all the lights will be on and it’s much easier to leave.
Sometimes I leave during the period before the encore, if I need to get up early the next day for work and I don’t want to waste an hour stuck in the jam trying to leave the venue with everyone else.
Went to a local concert the other day, small venue, around 500 people, it was POURING rain the entire performance, the band was getting drenched too, they were under a small tent but the rain was hitting them hard as well, anyway, they ended the final song before the encore, they got off the stage and just stood off to the side for like literally 15-20 seconds and got right back on stage for the encore, was pretty funny
Thought about this after seeing the Vulfpeck show last night. It was such an obvious thing. They just finished a song and left the stage without saying goodbye. Of course they were coming back.
Weird Al uses his as an opportunity to do a costume change. A few years ago on his stripped down vanity tour, him and the band just sort of walked to the side of the stage, but still in full view of the whole audience. Some people went on their phone, some wiped down their instruments. Then Al made a big show of noticing the audience was still there and they played their encore
Last band I saw said something along the lines of “Encores, you”re not dumb, we don’t like it, you don’t like it, so here’s just 4 more songs and we’re done”.

Yeah but it’s a nice excuse for a piss or beer break.
Right? I don’t get why they continue with the pretense. It’s collective mental masturbation IMO.
But that way ppl don’t ask for another encore
I went to see Bon Jovi once while back. They “ended” the show, but hadn’t done Living on a Prayer yet. Pretty sure they were coming back. Lol
Have gone to multiple concerts this year and every single artist has done this.

Yeah, and an important one for bar gigs. It really puts a cap on the show and lets people know they really need to plan on getting home safe.
Our singer even goes around matchmaking with the drunk and the sober to make it work. She sucks at breaking down the gear, so win win.

If you plan to do an encore. Do the encore. Was the encore not there?
