I’m surprised it’s not higher. PSA: If you’re south of Atlanta, you can get all the vitamin D you need from sunlight. If you’re north of Atlanta, ie the vast majority of the United States, the sun isn’t strong enough to trigger your skin to produce vitamin D no matter how long you stay outside. There are very few natural food sources of D, although some are fortified (milk). Most of us should be supplementing.

In Australia we have the same problem with people lacking Vitamin D, particularly children. It’s because we have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world so there’s been huge pushes for people to be very sunsafe, so now we have lots of people lacking vit D. I’m 38 weeks pregnant and have had low Vit D throughout my pregnancy, even with supplementation.

I spend tons of time outdoors, but with the use of sunscreen and sleeves, etc. I’m very Vitamin D deficient despite living 1 hour north of the Gulf of Mexico. Get those levels checked and supplement as instructed.

In the UK the government advice is to take vitamin d during autumn & winter (& some people all year round)

About a third of all Americans are vitamin D deficient. So this isn’t surprising.

I have been supplementing my entire pregnancy.
