I was surprised when I saw all of the hate he received for his speech after. He was far from my favorite nominee, I really wanted Sebastian Stan or Timothée Chalamet to win based on them having better performances. However, when Adrien started speaking, I immediately changed my mind and I was happy that he won. His speech came off so humble to me and so aware. I thought about it in contrast with Timothée’s speech at the SAG, talking about his pursuit of greatness. Instead, Adrien expressed gratitude, he thought about anyone who was ever kind to him, he gave thanks for the privilege he has to be able to do what he loves. He saw the award not as a sign of his own greatness, but as a gift from God. In my opinion, he conveyed authentic love for his craft and gratitude for everything that he has, not ego. I find someone who acts because of their love for the craft more respectable than someone who acts because they want to be famous, to have power or achieve greatness.
He talks about how special it is to him to get to act in those kinds of roles within the limited time that he has on Earth. It all came off very genuine and human to me, as if he is just a normal guy who does what he loves. Yes, indeed, the speech was long, because after he said what he wanted to say, he also felt the need to say the things he had to say for others, to thank people personally and address the issue of antisemitism. He had to complete the speech with those elements, hence it lasted longer, after he spoke his own heartfelt words. I don’t understand why people are so mad just because of the length of the speech. The whole show is filled with less creative or interesting moments and uninspired jokes. It was only a few minutes, spoken by one of the most important winners of the night. It was also clearly a mistake, so I think people have been too harsh. The comment about turning off the music sounded more confident rather than arrogant, and wouldn’t playing music over someone’s speech be even more rude? He was just standing up for himself. I just don’t really understand why Adrien Brody is targeted and seen as some arrogant prick, besides the general view that all people from Hollywood are narcissists. I don’t see how he is more arrogant than others, most of his outer persona seems to be about being grateful and kind.
