After 6 years, should my partner (M/25) and I (F/24) break up?

r/

Me (F/24) and my partner (M/25) have been togehter for over 6 years now. We met through mutual friends and have been unseparable ever since. Recently, however, it has dawned on us that we have drifted apart somewhat. It hasn’t affected the relationship majorliy, mainly annoyances and small discussions here and there, but yesterday, he opened up about how he’s truly been feeling about the situation. Essentially, we don’t have time for eachother at the moment. We live very different lives and rarely see eachother. This is mainly due to my partners schedule, which is jampacked with work, studies and other personal responibilities. Once we do meet up, we have to make it fit his everchanging schedule, including day and night shifts. In other words, it is impossible to make our hangouts and dates feel anything but a rushed slot in our schedules. He currently has no other choice than to focus on his career, which I fully support, but that means that the best cause of action would be to break up.

After a long talk about it last night, we decided that we really need to look over our relationship and decide if it’s worth continuing. We still love eachother deeply and want the relationship to continue, but we both know that the possible strain can destroy the good bond we share, and affect our futures. We only want the best for eachother and want to stay in eachothers lives. What do we do?

I think you should break up. It sucks, you both love each other, and no one here is ‘the bad guy’. Life just happened. When They say ‘love isn’t enough’ this is what they mean.

It hurts so bad and sucks now, but in the future you’ll be thankful that your first love didn’t end on a bitter and emotionally traumatic note like a lot of people do. You taught each other about what you want and need out of a relationship and helped each other grow. That’s a really special thing.

You met at 18. Very rarely do people stay with the person they met at 18 forever

Having different schedules makes it harder to connect of course. I mean if you both still love each other then no matter what comes in between, you’ve got to find a way to make it work even if the chance is slim. I don’t suggest breaking up until you have tried everything in your power to save it first.

Sounds like this has run its course. And that’s okay!

Say goodbye and wish each other well.
