Aftermarket Warning Lights on a Civilian Vehicle

r/

Dumb question: My truck came prewired with 12vDC and switches. I was thinking of adding a yellow warning light for when weather is terrible or I’m helping someone on the side of the road at night. Would you pull me over for impersonating a police officer/firefighter?

Check your state laws. Flashing lights in general are prohibited by most vehicles regardless of the color (with exceptions), in addition to blue and/or red in most states.

Unless you’re driving a REALLY old ass vehicle (like 1960’s or older) then your vehicle already has hazard lights for the situation you describe.

If I was really bored, I’d pull you over for the lights themselves as they arent allowed on non-work vehicles here. Nobody is going to see flashing yellow lights and confuse you for a cop so impersonating an officer wouldn’t even enter my mind

Each state has different requirements for auxiliary vehicle lighting.

Generally its only allowed for emergency vehicles, personal vehicles used in emergency response for volunteer agencies (fire/ems), and specific commercial vehicles like tow trucks, school busses, snow plows, mail delivery vehicles, etc.

Not sure why you need a yellow flasher for “when the weather is terrible” but non standard lighting just tends to confuse people, and lead to accidents.
