Hello everyone, AITA for bringing in a personal microwave for work? I work as a shuttle driver and a driver says in an inconsiderate a$$hole bc I put a lock on my microwave. He says he understands a personal fridge but a microwave should be for everyone. We have 20 drivers in the break room having lunch at the same time. They broke the new one in a day and we’re not allowed to use the one in the Dispatch office anymore and won’t get us a new one until it breaks. So right now there’s only one microwave for all the drivers so I brought in my own. Before bringing my own, I asked a bunch of people if they’re willing to split a microwave and they said no because they don’t wanna spend the money for a second microwave. So I brought my own this way I don’t have to worry about not being able to finish eating before going out and I put a lock on it because why do I want it to break in a day and nobody was willing to help shell out the money. So AITA?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> I could be the a$$hole bc I won’t let other drivers share my microwave even though I would have purchased it with other drivers. Putting a lock might make others jealous and maybe I should occasionally share it with other drivers

Well, no but this is juvenile. There are 20 of you. Not sure where you are but surely if you all chip in the equivalent of $5/£5/€5 then that would surely buy a decent microwave.
NTA for the question asked but you all need to start acting like grown ups and respect communal property
How do you lock a microwave???
NTA. They have no right to complain as they weren’t willing to chip in.
NTA
Unless you’re microwave is actually inconveniencing others (now there’s no space for a communal one anymore, you’re using the only free outlet or you’re using it to cook super smelly food others have to sit in or something) it’s fine to put a personal ting in the break room to make sure you have food.
I do wonder how people manage to break a microwave in 1 day and how you lock a microwave. Both are kinda impressive.
NTA
But will they resent you for having something they don’t regardless if they are entitled to it or not? Yes
It might be easier for you if you just bring sandwiches for a while so they focus on wanting one instead of focusing on why can’t they just break yours instead.
NTA they’re not willing to pay for it. They don’t have to use it. End of story.
NTA. Don’t get me wrong, you’re definitely not making friends with this move. In fact, people will absolutely dislike and shit talk about you. However, you’re a shuttle driver. You’re not stuck in an office all day with these idiots so who cares what they think? Protect your clean, single-person microwave and scoff at all the riff raff fighting over scraps and breaking everything. I wouldn’t share either.
If the complainer pays half he can have a key?
NTA. Before I got to the part where you asked people to chip in I thought you locked it to keep people from breaking it. Which like is still a valid reason. But added you tried to make it a group thing and now people want access to it for free after you bought it? Yeah, you’re in the right.
If people are really upset they may try and take it out on your microwave, so be prepared for that. If youre up for it, you could offer anyone who chips in now access or just when people bug you about it keep reminding them you offered to share the cost and they said no.

ESH: Blame the company they bought a rubbish domestic microwave for commercial use or else they would be returning it
NTA
Yet, I would probably shake my head over the behavior of everyone if I started working there and not knowing the backstory. A microwave is pretty damn big, and used for 5-10 min in a go. If everyone ends up thinking this is a good idea, you’ll end up with a wall of microwaves.
NTA. Added benefit of not cleaning it after other people splatter it with their food too.
NTA – so others are complaining coz you wont share your microwave, but wont make any contribution towards a new one? Sod em! U took initiative to sort ur own lunch, if theyre so bothered by it, they can buy their own! Plus would they share theirs with everyone, if they were in same shoes as you? Highly doubt it xxx
