I (F22) transferred colleges a year ago and am now majoring in science. This semester, we were grouped for labs and projects—and stuck with the same members the whole term. One of mine, we will call him “Smith,” is seen as the smartest in class and is on the student council of our whole department.
From the start, Smith barely showed up to labs (which are 80% of our grade), promised to help but never did, and later we found out he was altering our submitted data without telling us giving himself perfect results while we got low grades. He would only show up during class lectures and would disappear on us during labs He would also laugh at us when we had serious questions about certain topics making it seem like we’re stupid for being curious?
For our final project which consists also half of our grade, he interrupted others’ ideas and mine as well for an innovative design and pushed his own, which he willingly said he would do it and it would be easy, then ghosted us the day before submission. My group scrambled and submitted a rushed backup plan. We then removed him from the project entirely, which will cause him to fail.
Now he’s acting like we excluded him unfairly, and people think I’m the bad guy for leading the decision.
AITA?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> I think im the asshole because I kicked out my groupmate from a major project which consists half of the grade and now he fails the whole major subject.

NTA but you need to get together and speak to the professor before he does so that he doesn’t try to make a big mess of this. Include any documented proof you have of the fact that he changed your data/agreed to things he did not do, and stop waiting until the last minute to stand up for yourself.

Act like an asshole and people don’t wanna be around you. Kind of sounds like this is a lesson he needs to learn now before he enters the workforce and really screws someone over
NTA.
If you don’t do work, you don’t get credit. This dude fucked around, and now he’s finding out.
NTA. I mean he didn’t do his work…
What is a major in “science”? Sounds like a middle school class rather than a real university major.
“Hi yes, I received my Bachelor’s of Science in… science 🤓. I would like one science job please.”
NTA. Anyone who doesn’t show up and put in an equitable share of work and effort excludes themselves. The people who think you’re a bad guy for leading the effort not to have him mooch off your group’s work are likely people who like to have other people do their work for them as well, and are fine with cheating.
