AITA for getting a waitress terminated?

r/

I’ve been staying at kalahari resorts and me and my large family of 19 have very trying dietary restrictions. With this being said we have ordered the same meals for dinner the past 5 nights. ( each meal averages 30-70$) each night the bill was 800$ plus 20% grat. (200$)

Well the last night, last night I was in the restroom when my wife payed the bill, she noticed there was 20 entrees ordered on the bill, she just notices small things. She asked the waitress about it, we’ve had the same one all week, very kind waitress. She took it right off, accounting it to be a mistake. When we got back to the room, my wife went to check the other receipts because if we order the same stuff it should be the same price. She discovered there had been an extra entree added to each of our 5 other bills.

I went back down to the restaurant and asked the waitress to get a manager and she asked if there was something she could help me with. I explained to her what the issue was and she was stunned. She started crying, trying to user me out of the front of the restaurant telling me she will give me cash to cover it. She brings food home to her kids and since we were the last table each night with many people she just added her kids food to our bill each night. I allowed her to give me the cash and went back to the room. I told my wife what happened and she got angry immediately left the room. She went to the restaurant to speak with a manager & the girl was let go from what they assured my wife and also gave her a discount on our room. I’m torn idk if my wife did the right thing, i did the right thing by silently letting it go after getting restitution. I feel terrible.

I mean, on the one hand she was stealing from you.

But then, on the other hand she’s going to struggle to feed her kids even more now.

Bit of a no win situation, this.

  3. BrnEyesInSF Avatar

You did nothing wrong. The waitress was essentially stealing from you, and probably would have continued the behavior of she had not been fired. It’s very sad, because she must’ve have been pretty desperate to do that. But the restaurant made the decision to fire her, not you.

  4. Chefnick500 Avatar

NTA that is unacceptable on the waitresses part … Neither you or your wife are in any way to blame … How many other people has she pulled this scam on ? Stealing from you and sullying the good name of the restaurant.. Her circumstances may be unfortunate, but that does not excuse her wrongdoing

  5. Intelligent-Block457 Avatar

You NTA for investigating and getting money back. Like someone else mentioned, this was a no win situation for everyone. Makes you wonder how long this was happening. I would have just told my wife that the waitress made an error and that it was taken care of.

  6. ma3918 Avatar

Your wife is the AH. It was handled. Hopefully you gave her the money back. She needs it. Seems like you could easily have let it slide, but definitely should have been done when she paid u.

    NTA

Although I wondered for a second if she did it because you were a large group, it is likely that this is not the first time. If any other guests hadn’t noticed, I’m surprise by that. I empathize as you do but I also understand your wife’s reaction.

  8. Suitable_Title_56 Avatar

You’re not the AH but your wife is.,

9/10 times that shit is crocodile tears and shes an addict of some sort.

Given im jaded cause ive seen it with my sister and how she did that shit with her kids.

    Nta.

YTA. A business would never tell you if they terminated someone over your complaint. This story is fake.

  11. Current_Equal7797 Avatar

NTA. That waitress stole from you, and presumably the other clients she served that night.

  12. AZmountains4me Avatar

NTA- how many other people has she stolen from?! Your wife is right!
Hopefully she finds better employment to support her family.

  13. Consistent-Sky-2584 Avatar

Screw that shes a thief shes got the money to pay u for all the bills but cant buy food for her kids BS shes a greedy thief who got what she deserved i hope they press charges against her!

  14. cm-lawrence Avatar

NTA. Not your fault. The waitress was stealing.

  15. chaoticonism Avatar

NTA. I understand feeling bad but ultimately what she did was wrong and unacceptable.

  16. Wide-Frosting-2998 Avatar

Doubtful you’re the only person she pulls this scam with.

  17. i812manyhitsss Avatar

She’s a thief and you should never have a thief as an employee. You’re wife did the right thing.

  18. EngineeringCool5521 Avatar

You did the right thing. She was stealing from you. She got what she deserved. It does not matter if she was trying to feed her kids. It was unethical. You don’t know her situation, she probably had enough money to pay for it and just wanted you to pay for it since you were paying a lot and could afford it.

Your wife did the right thing too, because she was stealing from her (and your) kids. (Basically women fighting in this case).

Also, it’s; usher * is the verb you probably meant in sentence 3 paragraph 3. I kept reading it over and over again as ‘user’ I was confused.

  19. GradyG412 Avatar

YTA for accepting cash from the server. You should have let the manager refund you.

  20. Big_lt Avatar

    NTA

Waitress was not only stealing from the restaurant she was making you pay for her crimes. She could have spoken to the chef or even the manager I’m sure they would have given her left overs free or at severely discounted instead of tossing it

I bet she didn’t even have kids

  21. AWonderLuster Avatar

NTA. She definitely has done it before since she did it multiple times and didn’t hesitate. She benefited by doing this 2x on each check. Free meals for her family and a larger tip. She probably would have continued to do that. Who knows how many people she did this to. Probably also to some people who took a long time to save up money to take a vacation like that. I’m sure she’s making nice tips. She could have definitely picked her kids up with some McDonald’s if she was too lazy to go to the grocery store and pick up some items for a quick meal to make for them.

  22. Rionat Avatar

She stole and she probably did it to other people without getting caught. It’s best she no longer remain employed at that place so she doesn’t keep stealing from others

  23. MizAnthropy_ Avatar

You’re NTA. I feel like your wife kind of is though. Idk, I don’t condone what the waitress did but I feel bad for her.

  24. stroppo Avatar

Yr the A H for not telling the manager. What your wife did is absolutely right and you should be supporting her 100%. You shouldn’t condone theft.

  25. Equatick Avatar

How does this actually work? I guess she could verbally tell the line chef the dish is to go, but it just seems it would be obvious if she packed a dish up herself and took it home. I guess she was going to be caught pretty quickly either way, and a sucky situation.

  26. schec1 Avatar

NTA, the waitress deserved to be fired, she was stealing.

  27. UnicornStudRainbow Avatar

Your wife did the right thing.

Most restaurants will help out their staff if they need some food to take home. How many kids does this woman allegedly have? I don’t even believe she really does have kids, that’s the oldest excuse in the book when someone is trying to get out of a boatload of trouble — play on your pity and make you feel guilty.

Who knows how many people she has stolen from and how long she’s been doing this

  28. rudbek-of-rudbek Avatar

YTA only for taking her money and then reporting her.

  29. BlondeWalker999 Avatar

The waitress is a thief and deserved what she got. Plus, her behavior got her fired, not yours. NTA.

  30. vidgames Avatar

Don’t think of it as “getting a waitress terminated”; the manager terminated her (rightfully…she was stealing and putting the restaurant/resort at risk, legally and brand-wise). You brought up a discrepancy where you were being overcharged, and the manager rectified it by discounting your stay and eliminating the risk. The waitress didn’t have to do that and knew that she was putting her job on the line by stealing from customers and the restaurant. Her inability to comfortably feed her family (though there’s a good chance, working at a resort, she was comfortably employed) is her responsibility, and stealing/scamming food isn’t a legit solution.

  31. purplefoxie Avatar

nta, she fucked up and those are the consequences

  32. Aggravating_Ant_9261 Avatar

No she is a thief. End of story. It’s small things like this that end up bigger and bigger

  33. SummitJunkie7 Avatar

There is absolutely no way that was the first or last time she would have stolen from guests like that. Imagine if you were the restaurant manager, wouldn’t you want to know, so you could make your own decisions about who you trust as an employee?

You didn’t get her fired, neither did your wife – her choices did. I have empathy for people in difficult circumstances – but it’s definitely a choice to steal fancy restaurant entrees, that she then gets tipped 20% on.

  34. Gloomy-Breakfast8474 Avatar

NTA and you definitely should not have accepted her cash, and went straight to the management.

  35. rangersnuggles Avatar

NTA (about that, at least) , she was stealing straight up and that sucks. but also honestly a party of 19 all with weird ass dietary restrictions seems like cause for my than a typical 20% tip (which kinda makes YTA for that unrelated bit).

  36. TALKTOME0701 Avatar

Based on her reaction and giving you the money back. I would not have gotten her fired.

What she did was wrong but sounds like it was out of desperation I’m sure she feels worse than you.

How does your wife feel about it?

  37. Any_Pirate422 Avatar

Don’t feel bad. My guess is she has been doing this to many people for a long time. This time she got caught as she should have been!

  38. PreparationTotal7904 Avatar

Nta don’t have kids if you have to resort to theft

  39. Edcrfvh Avatar

NTA. She was stealing from her customers. End of story. You don’t know the back story. It could be she did something like this before and was allowed to pay it back and not be fired. Then she did it again. They fired her, not you.

  40. Dapper_Cantaloupe_34 Avatar

You were giving this woman $200 a night and she had the audacity to add an entire entrée onto your bill for her children? I am sure she probably gets an employee discount if she purchases the meals herself, so why can’t she just do that? I’m going to reiterate that you have given her a $200 tip for the last five days, that’s $1000. You guys aren’t the only tables that she had those days. She couldn’t have spent $50 of that for some groceries? Or $20 for about 10 cheeseburgers at McDonald’s?

You aren’t responsible for her getting terminated. SHE is responsible for getting terminated, by stealing from customers.

  41. KismetSiren1993 Avatar

She stole from you. Theres some gray area with customer service in what is/is not acceptable, but this wasnt a mistake. She did it on purpose, and did it multiple times. Who knows who else before you. She absolutely deserved to be fired.

Edit to add: if she had stolen directly from the restaurant, then it would have been nobody’s business but hers. But she didnt, she stole from customers

  42. fromhelley Avatar

Nta! And neither is your wife!

If someone looked you in the eye, called you a sucker, and took $10 out of your wallet 5 days in a row, would you tolerate that? That is what she did.

It was no accident that her kids meal was on your bill. Was it even from the child’s menu? Because most children aren’t awake by the time servers get home. The kids that are awake are old enough to have already made and ate their dinner.

Does she even have a kid?

  43. PattyLeeTX Avatar

I just wanna know if they fired the kitchen person in on it with her. 😂

  45. Old-Car1082 Avatar

    YTA your wife is uncool.

I mean obviously stealing isn’t okay, but people are struggling to feed their families. The job that doesn’t pay them enough to live is the real problem, who will punish them even more instead of helping.

You did the cool thing, but your wife is a snitch. Super lame.

  46. Searching_for_Wisdom Avatar

NTA at all, I rather starve and stay homeless than steal from people.

  47. NeighborhoodNo1623 Avatar

NTA that woman stole from you. Restaurants throw out a lot of leftovers. I’m sure if she had explained her situation to the boss he would have gladly “looked the other way” while she stole the food that was going to be thrown out anyway alot of Restaurant bosses do. In some places the boss will allow it outright. So not the asahole if she’s gonna steal from customers she should not work with customers

  48. Traditional_City_383 Avatar

Let’s see, she made $1K in tips off of your family alone that week but she still felt the need to steal from you. I’d say she had what was coming to her. Quite honestly I would want the tips refunded. Stealing from customers is NOT good customer service.

  49. Adorable-Flight-496 Avatar

Wasn’t the first time she did it. It was the first time she was caught

  50. Steve_Master Avatar

I doubt she saw anything meaningful of the one thousand dollars in tips. Its a resort theres no way they gave her a good share to be able to eat.

I feel you should’ve tried harder to stop the wife. Obviously you’re very well off. You accepted the repayment and also got her fired… could’ve just said yeah hotel made a mistake, and they gave me the money look its right here
